This and the spider angel are just the 'Damn why do you exist' level of 'Chump' when compared to like, Sahaqiuel "I am an extinction level event", Ramiel "I can literally reduce mountains to slag with geometric shrieking", and Zeruel "It took literal Deus Ex Machina to stop me."
I really wish they gave this Angel more screen time. Because that thing it does with its face is absolutely fascinating.
The way the head spins and seems to become two-dimensional. The resulting black void that takes its place, that can both shoot Angel beams and a swarm of tentacles longer than the Angel's entire body...
It always looked to me like it was making some sort of hole in the air. I think it could be the most bizarre Angel since Leliel.
This angel makes a lot of sense if you look at it from my point of view, where each Angel has taken a form that incorporates the knowledge learned by previous angels. The first one didnt even know there was a force capable of stopping it. By the time this one is around, they've learned that the only things used against them were ground-based assault systems, and powerful weapons designed to destroy solid targets.
You shoot clockiel with a laser, it breaks into pieces designed to fly apart, and reforms. You hit it with an N2 mine, same results. If you actually do manage to hit its decoy core from above, it wastes your time, and your limited ability to remaine airborne at such altitudes, before deploying its much more powerful actual core to stop any further attacks from that direction, while moving the real core (which no one was aiming at before) out of any possible reach of ground forces.
I do not know why its head moves like that. But its cute.
Asuka: which one of you was selected because of your father's influence? Me: more like which one of them was selected because of his father loving a hybridic clone of his wife more than his son, and still kicked the ass of 3 angels while scared to death and with no battle training or experience.
Interesting deployment details from this scene. Unit-02 was presumably being deployed fresh from the Europe to Japan, and thus those planes presumably flew straight from Europe when the operation was commenced. The bomber/carrier probably could flew the distance (with or without air refueling), but also as interesting that the escort fighters are Su-34s which is long range strike variant of the Flanker family. Its kinda cool they don't just put any ol' fighter jet there for a 2-3 second cameo.
Fun fact Clockiel was not supposed to exist in rebuild originally. Anno and the rest of the production staff at Khara intended to make Asuka’s intro just like the original series with a remastered fight against Gaghiel but the original scenes were lost which forced them to make a new angel.
It's scenes like this that make you forget that this whole series is just a descent into complete and utter madness and hysteria that ends with such tragedy and PTSD inducing stuff.
Im disappointed that Shinji didn't say he was visiting his mother's grave when Asuka asked where he was. She may have felt sorry if that's even possible.
