We dont charge to get in museums and we dont tax books... That is a freedom....

It's not an art museum exclusively. It's a design museum. Hence the images of the sciences and the arts on the door etc. that's what a lot of people get confused with when they first arrive.

William Morris is still very influential in the UK amongst artists and crafts people, you could even say that Morris as a socialist and Ruskin as a tory were responsible for the fact that the arts & the crafts represented the different sides of the political spectrum in ways that are still recognised in British culture. For instance the fine arts are still considered elitist and academic, but the crafts are considered skilled manual labour, the domain of the apprentice rather than the Academic.
The V&A was intended to reconcile these two opposing attitudes to the decorative arts and the fine arts, in the wake of the great exhibition.

I worked there for 11 years from 1984 to 1995, and I don't think in that time I went in every single room where art was on display. The building itself is a history lesson and deserves study in its own right.

I remember living in London when 'A Cafe with a Museum Attached' was the V&A's ad when the cafe first opened which seemed delightfully teasing . .

One thing about those plaster casts, is that many of the originals are now destroyed or worn by acid rain, etc. in many cases, these are now the best examples of what once was. 😊

Fun fact. The area in South Kensington where the museums are located were originally conceived by Prince Albert to showcase the wonderful artifacts gathered by various explorers in an effort to educated ordinary people, it was Albertopolis in his honour. The building of the museums was funded by proceeds from the Great Exhibition and the man who helped make it happen lived across the road from the V&A, Sir Henry Cole

At one point, when I'd spent the day at the V&A in the textile study rooms, I took my husband into the castings court. He'd been to the museum before, but for some reason, never that part. He was stunned.

Despite museums being free so many people take them for granted and don’t consider visiting them when they have a free day. It can be such a great day for children who are often amazed at what they see.

I LEFT THE UK IN 2009 - THE V&A IS ONE OF THE THINGS I REALLY MISS I miss fish and chips and a good curry, but the museums, especially the V&A are one of the things I miss the most

I grew up visiting the South Ken museums, the V&A is amazing and the cast courts are still a source of wonder!

That these museums are free always astounds me. On a warm day, the V&A courtyard is my favourite place to chill in that part of London. It feels like a proper oasis from the hussle of the city. People generally keep remarkably quiet and just relax.

That whole corner of London is amazing - V&A, Science Museum, and Natural History Museum all like a minute away from each other, and all free

Well delivered. A calm and - very importantly - unintrusive commentary, something that doesn't occur to far too many commentators who are unconcerned about irritating the rest of us with a loud voice. You have likely inspired others to visit the V & A, so well done, and good luck.
