I like how confidently he gives us instructions as if we are all going to really do it ourselves.

DIY Perks is the Bob Ross of building electronics.

This man is like Andy (The Greatest Technician That's Ever Lived), but raised in healthy and loving environment.

Just as I thought I wouldn’t see him again, he saves us from the apocalypse

just casually drops the gabecube killer at the end of the video like its no big deal

Me looking at the iMac screen through my laptop's screen: "wow that screen looks so much better than mine"

Just FYI, although most laptop motherboards don't have physical power buttons on them, many do actually have the space for one, so they can have one added for testing/diagnostics in the factory.
E.g. at 3:03 you can see an empty space labelled TP_PWR_SW1 to the top right of the keyboard connector - that's probably it, and of course you could test it in the same way. Finding that and soldering a wire to its 3.3V pad would generally be quicker, easier and with a more reliable connection than using the keyboard connector.

"they have been insulated from the insane price increases" ..... until this video  🤣

"Oh lovely idea, let me look at the price of refurbished pieces in my country."

Brass crying in Corner today😢

> Sees a laptop with a broken screen on Facebook marketplace for $30
Ferb, I know what we're going to do today.

We need another standalone video for that much cheaper solution at the end of video

7:33 "What we'll need next is..." copious amounts of brass of course

the trust in that back leg to not fall off the table at 22:38 is incredible

Love how I can always think I can almost do a project like this... Until we get to the audio part and then get completely lost

18:46 It's not a DIY Perks video without a DIY speaker😂.

The Steam Machine alternative idea was simply gold, what an excellent idea!

since I don't see anybody else mentioning it, and I have some experience trying to do something similar with a lenovo miix 520 board and I learned multiple additional obstacles to this project ;
1. without the battery connected the board may randomly power off even if connected to a well suited power supply from the charging port, at first I thought it wasn't getting enough power but eventually I bypassed this by dissecting the original battery that had died. (using the BMS board that was attached to the lithium pouches whilst disposing of the pouches. laptop recognizes the battery is "dead", but doesn't randomly power off immediately now.)
2. even once bypassed, the board may not be able to receive enough power from the charge port for heavy tasks and the board can randomly power off. looking closely at the charging circuit reveals pathetically tiny ribbon cable connections from the charging port. I still haven't worked around this yet. (don't know if I'm either going to add a dummy battery circuit from the charge port, or upgrade the connection past the ribbon cable. not one of my priority projects.)
3. lastly, my lenovo miix has terrible TERRIBLE thermal management and easily pushes itself to 90c despite fresh thermal paste, causing itself to thermal throttle. I wound up just throwing a copper heatsink to the back of it's original heatsink, but I'm far from satisfied with that result (cools it down significantly, just looks terribly ugly.) basically, these boards don't have any kind of heatsink screw placement standard, needing more fab work in order to upgrade thermal performance.

edit: I'm not at all trying to discourage anybody from a project like this, I LOVE the idea. just providing additional knowledge that would have been useful for myself. Thanks so much for the upload!

The prices of those boards will skyrocket after this video
