Welcome or welcome back to the stash!
Gerry Conway’s Spider-Man run is one of the most important eras in the character’s entire history.
Covering The Amazing Spider-Man issues 111-149, this video takes a deep, reflective look at the era that broke Peter Parker, reshaped his relationships, introduced iconic characters like the Punisher and the Jackal, and set the stage for the first ever Clone Saga.
From the death of Gwen Stacy, to Harry Osborn’s tragic downfall, to the emotional chaos of the 1970s, Conway’s run transformed Spider-Man from a teenage hero into a character defined by loss, responsibility, and resilience.

RIP Gerry Conway.

I wish we got this side of Peter more in modern day comics… someone who wasn’t afraid to be assertive. Someone who had a temper if heroes/villains push him too much…

Someone who has just as much bite than they have bark. Someone who can be sassy just as much as he can be witty.

This was the era that in my opinion really re-invented who Peter and Spider-man is

This era of spider-man is really great, I remember when i first read 121 and I could hear the pain and anger in peters voice while reading it

The Gerry Conway era was a real page turner for me. I could not stop reading several issues a day. It might be my favorite era of Spider-man.

When we're talking about this era of Spider-Man, I feel like it's important to remember the immeasurable contribution of penciller Ross Andru. Andru lived in New York, and used to travel around the city with a camera, taking reference photos, and if you're reading an issue Ross drew, pretty much every location we visit is a very real place, very accurately drawn. In your fondly-remembered Mindworm story, for instance, Andru went to take pictures of Far Rockaway, and made a real home there into the Mindworm's house. The owner threatened Marvel with a lawsuit, and an apology was published in later letters page for the way the house was portrayed.

In the words of Alex Lennen:

“Peter would eventually realize that if Gwen’s death taught him anything, it was how to move on and that moving on isn’t just forgetting about it. It’s about becoming deeply familiar with the past, incorporating that pain into this new understanding of yourself, and moving forward having changed, but stronger as a result. Reliving this horrible memory and reflecting on it… is a painful process for Peter, but it’s ultimately worth it. It’s allowed him to become a more competent superhero. It’s allowed him to handle other tragedies better and he’s just more secure in his identity….”

This is the era of Spider-Man that I first became aware of the character. I picked up each issue straight from an old fashioned newsstand back then. I wasn't aware how young Gerry Conway was at this time. One of the greatest writers in comic books.

It’s always crazy to think about how young Conway was

Gerry Conway is the most underrated Spider-Man writer ever. A definite top 10 run

Oh man I LOVED Conways run, no idea he was 19! That’s crazy, but honestly makes sense. Who would write a young adult Peter but a man just becoming one? Epic stuff. Great video as always

Rest in peace, Gerry Conway

Lee and Romita left big shoes to fill, but somehow Conway managed to match them. I honestly don't think Spider-Man would have stayed as big as he did if Conway hadn't been there to deliver such fantastic stories. He proved that Spider-Man was a great character and storytelling engine beyond his original creators. He continued Lee and Ditko's legacy of showing the character growing up and becoming a man, something many writers have sadly struggled with since. Conway's run was a great showcase of how to move Spider-Man forward without losing his essential qualities. Hopefully someday Marvel will remember that and stop trying to keep the character in stasis.

If I could describe this run in one word, the word I would choose is: Growth.

Remember when Spider-Man was allowed to actually change and develop?

Gerry Conway is a legend, an absolute legend.

I think new writers lost the understanding of the complexity of Peter Parker.

The next 200+ issues of ASM were built on the back of Conway’s run. All the most important and high quality storylines of ASM and Spectacular build on his legacy. Arguably as important to Spider-Man’s identity as Ditko and Lee.

I finally have collected this entire run in Epic Collections. It took a long time to get vol 7. It really does evolve the character. Gang War is a great start to this run. Len Weins run that comes after is solid and worth reading.

But this and the Stern run are the Gold standards after the Lee/Romita/Ditko stuff.

70s (early-mid) Marvel deserves more love it was pretty experimental and the art tends to be excellent. And the later part of the decade you can see 80s Marvel take shape as the companies standardized and gets competent leadership.

Great video as always. This is THE Spiderman comics channel imo. I love that the enthusiasm and understand it. I truly love these comics too.
