This is not only an outstanding explanation it is also a fantastic example of sheer love for quality education, I'm really grateful. Thank you very much indeed good sir. Greetings from Chile.
The real symptoms of Meniere's: 1) Vertigo, often severe 2) Varying hearing loss (worse when symptoms are worse, better when symptoms are better) 3) Tinnitus, often with fullness feeling in ear, especially prior to attacks 4) Nausea followed by vomiting, during an attack 5) Fatigue 6) Brain fog 7) Neck/head tension on affected side 8) Balance problems, sometimes with drop attacks 9) Cold feeling & cold sweats 10) Erratic eye movements, usually during attacks 11) Often a numbness feeling in hands, feet, face
My mother had it in both ears nearly fifty years ago now. She was grateful when it finally sent her deaf and the other symptoms finally went away. I remember she once had an attack of dizziness when she was driving home from work and I have no idea how she made it home.
This is the best explanation of Meniere's I've seen on YouTube. One question though, if endolymph is high potassium and low sodium, then why are Meniere's patients instructed to cut down on sodium rather than potassium?
Sir , hats off ! Thank you! Please add more topics from ENT ,we as students around the globe would be really greatful . Your method of explaining is simply awesome . Your work here, can help take off a loads of struggle on our part trying to work on topics.
Dr. Ted, THANK YOU! My wife has suffered with Meniere's since 1988. We've consulted with many practitioners, all of them caring and expert in their practices. But none of them has described my wife's condition, or the treatments, as well as you have! As I write, my wife is considering shunt surgery - scheduled for the next couple weeks. Thanks again!
Correction at 2:32 - 3:00 in the video. You have the chemical composition of endolymph and perilymph backwards. Endolymph contains high concentrations of Potasium and low concentrations of Sodium. Perilymph contains high Sodium and low Potassium concentrations. This is important because the high Potassium levels in the endolymph allow Potassium ions to enter the hair cells and causes depolarization. This depolarization action opens calcium channels, which in turn causes neurotransmission of the signal along the nerve fibers. High potassium in the endolymph is critical in the process of getting the sound signal to the brain. You can find out more info by a doing a Google search asking "What is the chemical composition of endolymph?"
