Info below is all based on pre-big bang spell damage calculations. I am not sure if these calculations changed for new Classic.
INT raises your Total Magic (the main variable in the damage equation) and adds to the INT section of the equation, every point of INT contributes slightly more base damage than a point of Magic Attack directly from gear. It is a small difference, but wanted to bring that to attention. However, even with the small difference, you should always take INT over M.ATTK because INT intrinsically has more value due to its additional MP boost.
1 INT generates anywhere from 0.15 to 7.0 more raw damage per hit than 1 Magic Attack depending on the spell's power, making 1 INT mathematically superior to 1 Magic Attack in all scenarios.
Some examples of skills below. Based on max level skill and 60% mastery
- Fire Arrow gains+0.60 base damage per hit from 1 INT over 1 Magic Attack because it has the highest single-hit Spell Power (120) available in 2nd Job. Because of its high spell power, 1 INT provides exactly +0.60 more damage per cast than 1 Magic Attack.
- Cold beam (100 spell power), 1 INT provides +0.50 more damage per cast than 1 Magic Attack.
- Thunder Bolt (60 spell power), 1 INT provides +1.80 total damage across all six targets compared to 1 magic attack.
