I'd love to see a return episode after a year or two to see if things have gone well. I often think this has a strong relapse potential.

When I'm decluttering possessions I've inherited from a loved one, I find that it helps to hold up each object and ask, "Would he/she want this object to represent him/her?" The mere fact that something came out of your grandparents' home shouldn't make you feel obligated to keep it. For all you know, they hated that item. Choose objects that represent good memories of the deceased and illustrate the type of person they were.

“And then you’re accused of smuggling rubbish out which of course we were” 😂😂😂😂

I felt so sorry for the young man living like that , now he can have friends around .... I hope it works out for both of them & they never clutter again .......

I watch these to make me feel better about my normal mess.

Interesting that when sorting through the newspapers to throw away, he uses the following metaphor and says he feels, „torn up.“ I wonder if he felt discarded and rejected by his parents for sending him to boarding school and he’s channeled that into hoarding, vowing never to treat objects the way he felt treated.

At the last he said "you feel lighter". That is exactly right! I recently down-sized from a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage home into a small apartment and rid myself of over 40 years of life's accumulations. It was wonderful. I feel so much lighter and free from the weight of all of those "things".

As the child of a hoarder, it makes me very sad that the mom puts pressure on her son to help her declutter. It is her problem and he cannot help her.

If he dropped his cigarette it would go up in flames!

I've watched a lot of US hoarder shows where they go in and just clear the stuff out over a few days and with a few bouts of tears and anger they give them back a house. It's good to see the work being done at the start to help them figure out why they're hoarding and helping them face their problems and therefore hopefully allow them to restart without their hoarding need

The fact they're in therapy to deal with their hoarding is something you don't see on these programs. Clearly, it's based in unresolved trauma. you can see how depressed they are. Healing that is the way forward. Best wished to both of them for their healing.

First time I’ve seen hoarders brought together to share their experiences. Really effective way of validating their losses, guilt, challenges, and desire to be free from their hoards.
Bravo!! Best results I’ve ever seen, as well as the least traumatic road to achieving the clear out of clutter.
Thank you for sharing!

Time. The newpapers capture a time, a moment in time and I think for Roddy, he is stuck in a reality that has long since passed. The trauma from the loss of his brother and the moments he will never live run parallel to the waste of the life that he is living. His anger/rageful outburst is repressed shame. But he feels deeply.

Sarah trying to blame her son for not helping her enough is so toxic

@MrMattjohn87 1 month ago

Roddy doesnt even have that much stuff. If it was organized properly it would disappear

Doesn’t it go to show that mental health issues can literally effect anyone at any level of society. He’s turned his home into an open landfill site. A very expensive one. And a huge fire risk. A risk to him, his friends and family and his neighbours as well if that lot goes up in flames.

Rodrick’s house is beautiful and has so many nice things hidden with so much rubbish.

Wow the mom trying to pass the hoarding problem onto her son. Blaming Him for not helping her declutter and at the same time her refusing to toss anything.
