Platoon is a 1986 American epic anti-war film written and directed by Oliver Stone, starring Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, with supporting roles by Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, John C. McGinley, Richard Edson, Kevin Dillon, Keith David, Reggie Johnson, Johnny Depp, Mark Moses, Chris Pedersen and Tony Todd. It is the first film of a trilogy of Vietnam War films directed by Stone, followed by Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Heaven & Earth (1993). The film, based on Stone's experience from the war, follows a new U.S. Army volunteer (Sheen) serving in South Vietnam while his Platoon Sergeant and his Squad Leader (Berenger and Dafoe) argue over the morality in the platoon and of the war itself.

Funny how Tom Berenger and Charlie Sheen would immediately go on to work together in vastly different roles in the baseball comedy Major League.

RIP Corkey Ford (Manny) who passed away last week. It's not listed on IMDB yet, but his Obit was listed in the local paper, Lincoln, Nebraska where he was from.

Fun fact: Corey Glover, who plays the soldier who stabs himself in the leg, is the lead singer of the rock band Living Colour. The band had a hit with the song Cult of Personality.

Tom Berenger should have won an Oscar for his role as Sgt. Barnes. He really made you feel like you hate this guy!

And that, ladies, is why grandpa usually never wants to talk about the war. 😥

I liked that in real life actors Charlie Sheen and Kevin Dillon actually paid for cateract surgery for one of the young actors in the village.

I was an Army infantryman for 12 years. 15 months in Iraq, total of 24 months in Afghanistan. No movie about grunts in combat has ever broken my heart like Platoon.

Oliver Stone served two tours in Vietnam, and based the characters in this film on people he'd known from each.
He served with the real-life analogues for Barnes & Elias at separate times, and wondering what might have happened if these two complete opposites had served alongside each other was a big inspiration for his writing this movie.
There were a few great Vietnam films made around this time, like The Deer Hunter (1978) and Apocalypse Now (1979), but for my money this one is the best.

(Interesting that you should mention Top Gun before watching, as that film had just come out, and was tearing up the box-office, when the Platoon cast & crew returned from filming, and they took that as a sign that their movie wouldn't do well, given how different it was going to be. Ultimately they needn't have worried, as Platoon was also a big hit.)

My dad volunteered for Vietnam in 1966. Served three combat tours through mid 1969. This is his favorite Vietnam movie. I grew up hearing about his service in Vietnam. When I first saw Platoon I was 11. My Dad took me. He sat quietly through the whole movie and the ride home. He never suffered the PTSD that some did. He made it through those tours without a scratch only to find out he was poisoned with agent orange. He's still alive despite all the illnesses that he developed. Most people have heroes, I get to call mine, Dad. Thank you ladies for watching and reacting to this movie.

Forrest Whittaker's line hits so hard, the understatement and honesty of it... "I don't know about you guys, but I'm hurting real bad inside." So simple, it just says it all.

Nicki and Leia has that Hudson and Hicks dynamic.
And it's beautiful to watch.

Elias's hands to heaven death scene is one of cinema's most iconic moments. Famously parodied in Tropic Thunder.

Platoon was the first in Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy, with the second and third being 'Born on the Fourth of July' & 'Heaven and Earth.' I highly recommend the second film starring Tom Cruise, in which he earned an Oscar nomination.

Charlie Sheen's father Martin Sheen was a lead in the best film about Vietnam war The Apocalypse Now

Dale Dye who played the captain was a real vietnam vet originally brought on as an advisor. He is seen having a ptsd moment as their filming of the aftermath of the last battle as he just stares. Oliver Stone recognized it and had the cameraman film it and it was put in the movie.

Captain Harris, the base commander in Platoon was played Captain Dale Dye who served three tours of Vietnam, and who was the technical advisor to the movie, and a US Marine legend. His blank stare at the end of the Vietnamese offensive in the movie was a real flashback to the war in Vietnam. He wasn't acting.

Oliver Stone served in the Vietnam War . This movie he wrote and directed depicted what he experienced there.

I spent some months in Portal, GA working for a Vietnam veteran named Jake Beasley, RTO 101st ABN, God rest his soul, and he told me this movie was the best depiction of what it was like over there. May God grant him and his brothers rest. Staying with him at his house is one of my most cherished memories. I miss you, Mr. Jake.
