I, naive fool that I am, had always assumed that Jaws of Darkness implied Cortex had quite literally built his castle on top of the ruins of a people he destroyed before hand.

We need to bring video game manuals back

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who caught onto things like this.  The original game makes you feel as if you're on an epic journey through lands conquered by Cortex, and you can feel the environment change as you progress through the levels.

Fun fact: you can see Cortex Castle and the dirigible from the moment you gain control of Crash in N. Sanity Beach!  Look to the top right corner of the screen, and you'll see a shadow in the distance that looks like a mountain...

"You think he'd be haunted for desecrating so many ancient ruins"
Me: casually gestures at Cortex's suffering since he built his castle that was manifested by his own hand via creating Crash.

I love how almost scary crash 1 is. I know their inspiration was cartoons like looney tunes but it certainly didn't end up like that. The background elements are so textured and detailed, the  music is really minimal and it's just so full of atmosphere, something the later games fail to achieve. Even something as simple as the reverb in the temples and generator room is so effective.

I could argue that Jaws of Darkness does make a small amount of sense in some way, that being that it serves as evidence that the third island had civilization on it at some point, similar to the second island and Cortex decided to use the ruins as a foundation for Cortex Castle.

I have always felt that Crash 1 was a story of nature vs man. You start out on all these beautiful islands full of nature, plants, trees and animals. This gets slowly replaced with factories and machinery and you end up fighting mad scientists who have turned the nature into toxic sludge and the animals into robots and monsters.

N.sane trilogy adds a bit of context to explain Lights Out and Fumbling in the Dark.

when crash defeats pinstripe, he accidentally shoots the machinery behind him and that room goes dark.
implying that was the main source of power in the Generator Room of the castle.

I've always loved the sense of atmosphere that Crash 1 has. It can genuinely be pretty foreboding, especially as you get closer to Cortex's territory (Generator Room in particular I think perfectly captures that ominous industrial tone), and it's interesting how literally none of the games afterwards have really attempted this. The closest I'd argue we get to this tone post-Crash 1 is Uka-Uka's introduction scene in Warped.

On that note actually, I do have a bit of a headcanon regarding the Jaws of Darkness temple and how it can still narratively fit being on Cortex Island (albeit retroactively): it's the temple Uka-Uka is imprisoned in. We know Uka-Uka's temple prison is somewhere on the Wumpa Islands (Cortex's space station is shown hurtling specifically towards the islands at the start of Warped), the Jaws of Darkness entrance and the temple entrance we see in Warped do look relatively similar, and they say in Warped that Uka-Uka was locked deep inside it / underneath it, which could explain why Crash never crossed paths with him during the events of Crash 1. We also know that Cortex was already in contact with Uka-Uka prior to Crash 1, so perhaps he crossed paths with him while setting up his operations on the island. It doesn't all 100% line up, granted, but I think it's close enough to work.

With all that said, nice work on this video!

I love how the reason for the castle being on fire in Cortex's boss fight is the TNT crates you set off to reach the exit portal in The Lab

10:30 Considering the retcon at the beginning of Warped, it's likely it was where Uka Uka was being held captive.

Glad there are others who see Crash Bandicoot 1 the same way. I absolutely loved the way it told it's story and the fact that you can almost always see Cortex Tower is really fun. From the very second the game starts, you can see Cortrex Tower in the far distance. Something that is missing in the N. Sane trilogy

Crash 1's environmental story telling is one of the reasons I love the game so much (despite the flaws it might have). It's such a unique thing and it's different from the cutscenes we're normally used to. I hope that Crash 5 can implement environmental story telling in SOME sort of way.

It should be mentioned that Crash Bandicoot (particularly the first game) took major inspiration from classic cartoons featuring anthropomorphic characters, and thus took it's storytelling ques from the same. Given that Crash is a nearly silent character, it makes sense that they would choose to tell the story through his actions and the environment as you play, much like watching a cartoon with a silent protagonist.

I like how Crash 1 has a goofy yet somewhat foreboding vibe to it because it probably reflects how Crash himself feels. Notice how unlike the later games, Crash’s idle animations have him constantly looking over his shoulder and that he looks terrified whenever he runs. It’s probably because this is his first time outside of Cortex’s castle after being mutated and now he’s in a strange hostile environment where almost everything is out to get him.

Funnily enough, Donkey Kong country did something similar to this. All we know at the start of the game is that King K Rool stole DK’s banana hoard. Which would be enough motivation for DK to fight him. But as you play the game, you realize through the game map that the Kremlings are trying to take over the island as well. The fifth area of the game (located near the top of the island) is called “Kremkroc Industries, Inc.” and the levels are all industrial factories and mines. I’m not sure what they’re trying to produce exactly, (probably TNT barrels) But their actions seem to have affected DK Island as a whole. Their factories are causing major pollution to the island. One level takes place in a polluted lake and the main boss of the area is a giant toxic barrel complete with skull and crossbones logo. This would explain why all the animal enemies are hostile towards DK, they are all on edge from their habitat being disrupted. It would also explain why a lot of the bosses are just bigger versions of the enemies. The toxic waste caused them to grow way past their original size. I find it interesting that some of the Kremlings got trapped in the mines  and were basically cursed and turned into Rockkrocs. Their greed has affected their forces adversely as well.

I miss when games like these told stories through visuals alone. Great video by the way.

If you know about the Wrath of Cortex original pitch you'll find that game has an environmental storytelling that is very similar to Crash 1. you have the heat world with an island on fire and deserts, a lot of snowy areas in the frozen world, flooded cities and caves in the water world, and dark forests and castles in the world with no light also every fifth level in a warp room is a lab matching that world's theme but sadly because that context is lost and the levels were shuffled around in the final version is very hard to notice

This is why Crash 1 is my favorite out of the classic trilogy, it’s visual storytelling is unmatched in the sequels. As a writer, I appreciate stuff like this🙏💯

jaws of darkness's location actually makes alot of sense due to the law of crash 2, the intro level for crash 2 cortex falls down into the 3rd islands ruins, close to jaws of darkness, the underground ruins could be connected to the location that the master crystal is located, but thats just my theory

Crash went to the other island by floating on a leaf in the sea, obviously
