Phil is uncomfortable during this interview because he knows he was a real dick to Chester.

A great level of professionalism and bonhomie Mr Edginton. These guys were great together, it's a shame there was a fallout. Mr Thompson was a major part of the later Genesis and should be seen as such, not just as a session player.

Thanks 🙂

Genesis was tough for both drummers. They were improvisationalists and Genesis didn't allow that anymore. For the last 30+ years, Genesis was its own cover band.

Chester never got the respect from Genesis that he deserved. An amazing technical talent. Chester's chief fault is that he never promoted himself above others. Phil was a great drummer. Chester was better. And Genesis never let him in.

chester was a awesome drummer just like phil

The arrogance of the then there were three group is understated. Hackett left because of it, and them treating Chester and Sturmer like extras was wrong and turned me off.

I can't believe the negative comments about Phil and Chester. Both amazing, but like it or not, no one was going to sound like Phil Collins. I can't blame Phil for wanting what he wanted in their sound. It was his music and Chester was a sideman, as great as he was.

As you can tell phill could care less about Chester Thompson, his career with phill Collin’s has come to an end his service is no longer needed. It’s really sad but phill is the boss. And Chester is happier.

Collins/Thompson wasn't even the best Genesis 2 drummer setup. Bruford/Collins was someone special for the tour it lasted. They did Chester dirty, keeping him on as just an employee all those years.
Best 2 drummer pairing is The Allman Brothers. Individually they might not as good as either Collins orThompson but together they are amazing.

Chester was playing for Zappa and Weather Report before. He was more than capable playing for Genesis afterwards

The weird thing to me is, Chester is a trained jazz player and can read drum charts and has been taught the right grip and how to move around a kit properly. Phil learned everything he knows just by ear on his own, so his approach to the kit is an entirely different thing that while unorthodox is all his own and works. Granted it caught up to him (Phil) in later life because of posture and drum placement, but the sounds he produced were fantastic. Why is that weird? Because while I feel Chester is a better drummer, I prefer to watch Phil play the kit, because it's such a unique approach. At the end of the day though I like to think they are of mutual respect and they had a good time playing together. I love both players.

I think Collins was jealous of Chester, a bit of a narcissist me thinks?

Phil is/was a truly inspirational musician. He also appears to have a big heart when it comes to his children. Interpersonal relationships? Not so much…

Chester wasnt a pure jazz drummer. He is a very well rounded player; rock, fusion, jazz, and pop.

I was lucky to see Chester play with Genisis at Maple Leaf Gardens and it was a great show. Phil would be playing drums with Chester then run up to the mic and sing. I was about less than 50 ft from the stage. 👍😎
