100% agree. No new homes should be built, and when homes get washed away they should not be rebuilt. The road is sand farther up the outer banks, and it should be left as sand when the pavement is washed away. If the residents want pavement, they can pay for it.

the other part about the realignment of I-81 in Syracuse affects the STATEWIDE roadway: I-81 is also being converted to a MILEAGE-based exit numbering system. that transition is ALSO being done with the NEW alignment of I-81 already accounted for.

Man you’re the man I live for these videos. As a train engineer I love roads and tracks.

I've been a road geek since childhood 50-ish years ago. Great content, sir.

That city official that was casually demanding 200 million dollars from someone else to fix NC 12 was a trip. If we can't kick the people off a barrier island, I think the whole thing should be tolled. The tourists and the beach house owners can pay for it. I would have payed tolls when I vacationed there a couple of times. There's no reason a road on a sand dune needs to be free.

Similar to NC-12, FL-399 on Santa Rosa Island, Florida gets washed away once every couple years. However, it does not connect permanent residents to the mainland, so FDOT takes their sweet time repairing it when necessary

A rail metro on a drawbridge is wild to me lol

3:05 The Basnight Bridge replaced the Bonner Bridge a few years back. The Jug Handle Bridge over the sound into Rodanthe replaced a stretch of NC-12 that was washed away north of Rodanthe about 12 years ago.

What you didn't mention is that in conjunction with changing I-481 to l-81, NYDOT changed the exit numbering from sequential on the original I-81 routing to mileage-based exit numbering on the new I-81 routing.

I grew up in Syracuse area and I will die for my region

As a North Carolinian, I agree with you completely about the outer banks

I can see rerouting an interstate to rebuild and fix the existing one but to remove it seems like it's a bandaid and pushing the issue into the future. I did I-40 in 2024, it is an absolute disaster. I feel for anyone that needs to do that drive daily. And the stop sign at the end is an easy fix, roundabout.

Yikes! Syracuse is on my next route! Thanks for this.

My gripe with I81 is further south between the interchange with I70 (close to Hagerstown MD) and north to the PA TPke It is utilized by a great deal of truck traffic and is a two-lane highway in both directions. Ordinary passenger vehicles are held up by trucks passing VERY slowly in the left lane all the time. It has gotten so annoying that now I avoid I81 altogether.

Same thing happened with a segment of TX 87 in southeast TX. They haven't rebuilt it in years

I drove that section in late 1998 and it is nice…of course at night. Like you Mike ran it right before I got out of the Marine Corps….Semler Fi brother!

I drove down Highway 12 five months ago. Its a great drive with almost an alien landscape unlike anything else you'd see in the US. Highly recommended drive.
