Teaching:
Yes, Australia doesn't pay teachers as much as other people who have spent similar time getting qualified. But unlike the US, they definitely get paid more than bar staff.

Also, he was referring to being a teacher, even if you aren't one. You don't need years of university study to pass on your knowledge and experience. Coach kids sport, train the new staff member, set assignments for the intern that has nothing to do with the job but everything to do with filling the gaps in their education.

An honorary doctorate is way more valuable than a gifted nobel prize.

What Tim is saying is a strong reflection of Australian culture, which is very different to the culture of the USA, despite looking the same on the surface. Australian culture is about community, American culture is about individualism. Australians are raised to be humble about our successes, and to never look down upon other people for their situation in life, and to help others, teach and share our knowledge. Americans are raised to put their best foot forward at all times, to show off their successes, to believe that they are better than others for shallow reasons, and to guard whatever advantages they have in life.

Tim is the epitome of authenticity.  He is always himself, and what a wonder that is. So forget all the recommendations to change who you are and be, instead, wholly and uniquely and authentically you. You are lovely, Heidi.💝

Thank you for TEACHING me Heidi! You have presented so many good people on your channel including YOU!! :)

Another great inspirational Tim Minchin reel is “Play it Safe” which is  Tim’s celebration of the Sydney Opera House’s  on its 50th Birthday. A truly delightful piece worth reacting to.

When my daughter turned 18 my friend said “ you’ve done well Mum. She’s not on drugs or in jail “ 😊😊

If you want to see how good of an actor Tim is, his show Upright is phenomenal. 10/10 show, cast, writing, and of course, music.

“Can’t be Kant (German philosopher)” - beautifully crafted line for that audience

My favourite thing about the video (and I've watched it MANY times) is the guy in full regalia behind Tim laughing about his silly jokes.

I've listened to this commencement speech about 2 times a year since it was posted and it's been some of the guiding principles of my life. At different points in my journey it's had different guiding nudges from "don't focus too far ahead" to "spread your knowledge" to "don't be bold in taking credit for your successes and don't be too hard on yourself for your failures" to "don't sit around smoking cones" to "be hard on your OWN opinions... Most arguments are like excellent serves from opposite ends of different tennis courts", many things have helped me be kinder to myself and to my fellow human

Edit: to add to this as I'm remembering the "lucky" portion, YES! I've accepted myself as flawed. My life and the lives of those around me has been measurably improved by be ending the fruitless pursuit of trying to change myself and beginning the process of accommodating myself. Time blindness means I'm going to be late every day? Ok, well I'll lose any job I try to keep, so how about I get coffee every day before work. Now if I'm too late for coffee, I can skip it and now I'm on time for work. If I am on time I get coffee AND work! I have 20 more examples, but the point is I stopped trying to change me and started trying to change my workflow to make my life and the lives of those I impact better and it's been so much more successful

This was great. I have watched the original so many times and it resonates with me so much and it's cool to see how others like it too. Thank you.

He's 100% right on so many things :) Im an old codger, so I can confirm.

"Empathy is intuitive, but is also something you can work on intellectually" is very profound

Tim is so humble
I think that is what makes his talent so relatable to others
Tim is not above anyone else
Tim is right here amongst us all
And Tim knows that for sure
Thanks for this reaction
💯♥️🇦🇺

I think a lot of the differences you mention stem from the problem of toxic individualism here in America. Here, motivators say to focus entirely on oneself. I think Tim is saying that helping others also helps oneself.

He is a genius.

Where we are now is a blessing.
Every second we have on this rock spinning through space is special and it only happens once.......... so choose love and happiness.

Be kind to yourself, you made life and it is perfect..... And you grew that ........... That is amazing

I'm glad you liked this one. I've returned to this speech a number of times in my life for the last 15+ years. It really is refreshing, especially the part about dreams. Which is couldn't agree with more, having grown up with an anxiety of not having or finding a "dream". When in reality being a good citizen of the world, is enough of a challenge for most & should be pushed higher up the list of priorities i think. Hopefully that message would bring into reality some lovely dreams, as a fortunate & natural byproduct. I love that you're highlighting these real gems of the past, that really should be rediscovered by more. I've never been religious, but always been fascinated by it, so I’m loving your insight too. It's a great service you are providing, thank you.

Suggestion: Tim Minchin and his rant about confirmation bias.
