Penelope is one of my favorite characters of mythology, particularly because she is a woman from ancient times that is shown to be strong and smart, as well as one of the most loyal people of all. To recap, Penelope was the third princess of Sparta, so she was raised to know how to fight and take care of herself, as well as a kingdom. She fell for Odysseus, and he fell for her, but he had to concoct a way for the current king of Sparta to convince her father to let him marry her. He achieved this by having all the kings of the various city-states agree to a pact that whoever is chosen as Helen's husband would not be disputed, and if anyone tried to force an alternate outcome once the suitor was chosen, then the rest of the kings would agree to band together to suppress the kingdom that broke the oath... so essentially laid the groundwork for the Greek forces to unite against Troy. But she was immediately beloved in Ithaca by the people, and helped Odysseus in governing the kingdom.
When the Trojan war happened, she spent 10 years ruling over Ithaca on her own, and did a damn fine job of it. When the war ended and the storm came, where people were convinced Odysseus had to have died, she held faith he was alive and would return to her. Part of the curse placed on Odysseus and his crew was that other ships could see them, but they would not see another human out at sea. So they would pass by ships that would carry tale of Odysseus and his crew and their exploits back to Ithaca, vindicating her faith and letting her be for the time the tales came in. But in the third year following the ending of the Trojan war, the ships came in and reported how Odysseus and his crew were smote by Zeus... and Penelope still had faith that he was alive and would return to her. She fought for around four more years, until the other parts of the ruling class told her she had to find a suitor to rule Ithaca, where she essentially said, "Fine, but first I'm going to make a funerary shroud detailing my husband's exploits, then settle down, that'll be my mourning period" and held off for another three years.
In those three years, she concocted her challenge which would have one of two outcomes. When she received a sign from the gods that her husband was truly gone, or on his way home (i.e. a storm of the same magnitude that took him away from the shores), she would issue her challenge. If, somehow, someone succeeded in stringing the bow, and placing the shot demanded, then she would die and reunite with Odysseus in the Underworld, meanwhile one of the suitors would have murdered the queen, allowing all of Ithaca, including her son, to kill all of them, and Telemachus could ascend to the throne. Or, the second outcome, her husband returns... in which case, she has given him back his greatest physical weapon, in a place he knows like the back of his hand, and with many allies in the shadows because the servants could assist in arming him with more arrows. Either way, the suitors would die, and she would be reunited with Odysseus.
Then at the end... gods I love the sheer indignation in her voice in Epic, saying "Only my husband knew that, so I guess that makes him you"... She knows that a particular god has a nasty habit of shifting into the physical form of kings and seducing queens, so she asks him for a single favor... That if he had attempted to do, she would have KNOWN it was Zeus in disguise. It was a final test, just to be for absolute certain her husband is really home. She could not afford to hope, because faith has already helped her for 20 years, but in that moment, with Odysseus standing across from her, she needed absolute certainty.
In conclusion, Penelope is FUCKING AWESOME. Find yourself a Penelope.

Fun fact: Aeolus is a male but Jorge liked Kira Stone's( I think that's her name) so much that they kept her as the voice of the wind god.
Also Circe is voiced by the creator's girlfriend
Also now that I'm thinking about it, Circe tried to seduce and kill her ex's great grandson 😂😂😂😂

1:22:40 quick little correction to be that guy:
In the text Anticlea (Odysseus’ mother) dies of a broken heart not suicide and that comes from common interpretation of what Homer meant but she just died from the grief of thinking her son was dead

Here's some fun facts about EPIC!
1. The island Ogygia that Calypso resides on is enchanted. If you try to sail away from it from its northern shore, you will find yourself on the southern shore of the island, and vice versa. Same for east and west. This enchantment is actually maintained by Calypso herself because the Island gives her permanent youth and beauty. If she were to leave, she would lose it.
She was banished to the island after supporting the titans in a 10 year war (this is a more modern take, in homers story she just lived there
Its said that during the day, Odysseus would cry on the shores of Ogygia, and at night he would be forced to "sleep" with Calypso in her cave.
Athena convinces Zeus to step in, and he sends Hermes to the Island, who tells Calypso that Odysseus is fated to return home to Ithaca, so she must release him for which she reluctantly obliges, and removes the enchantment from Odysseus, allowing him to leave.
It's important to note, that EPIC is different from the mythos. Calypso never assaults Odysseus in EPIC, she actually falls in love with him and treats him kind and fair but as a goddess, she thinks mortals are objects to be owned, hence why she traps him there. Odysseus greatly appreciates it, but feels guilty that she loves him without the love being reciprocated.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. In Greek mythos, there was a very specific way you had to be buried, with coins. This is because the River Styx is winding and confusing, and those without a guide were doomed to wander the underworld for eternity. Had you been buried with coins, you could pay the ferryman Charon, to guide you across the river.
So we know why Polities was there, he was killed in the cave, and the rest of his men were killed at sea, but why is his Ody's mom there? Surely the mother of a king would have proper burial rites performed when she died?
Well in most telling's, its said that Anticlea (his mom) dies from a broken heart, but in a few, its said that upon seeing the storm conjured by Poseidon, she was filled with grief, believing that no man could survive such a storm. Believing that her son was dead, she climbed the cliffs of Ithaca, and threw herself from the peaks into the water below, hence no proper burial.
Also the slight discrepancy with the number of men killed by Poseidon and the number of souls in the underworld can be explained. Elpenor was a soldier on the crew. At Circe's palace, he become intoxicated and climbed the Palace, falling from the top and breaking his neck killing him. Ody actually meets him in the underworld later, and Elpenor exclaims that "no one even noticed he had died" which is true. There was a song planned for him, but it was ultimately cut.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Scylla is a legendary 6 headed man eating monster. Her lair lies on a narrow strait opposite Charybdis, a gigantic sea swallowing creature that sucks in water 3 times a day.
The two threats lie so close together (about the distance an arrow can fly from a bow) that those wishing to avoid the whirlpool made by Charybdis find themselves dangerously close to Scylla, and sailors wishing to avoid Scyllas snarling teeth, may find themselves being swallowed whole by the sea.
Odysseus knew all of this. He could go through Chardybis and succeeding means no men die, but failing means losing his entire ship, meanwhile going through Scylla means 6 men are probably going to die, but the crew as a whole survives, so he has his Eury light up 6 torches, randomly selecting 6 men to die without telling his men what the torches are for. This differs from the original myth, where they pass through Scylla in pitch black, and the only way Odysseus knew his men were being taken, was because they were screaming as Scylla snatched them from the ship. In both EPIC and the myth, Odysseus fails once again to tell his crew what he's leading them into, believing himself to be capable of guiding them through it on his own. This turmoil eventually leads to the mutiny from his tired, starving and now distrustful crew.
Also really neat, the first part of Scylla's words is sung by just Scylla, but the second part starting from "GIVE UP YOUR HONOR AND FAITH!!" is sung by Scylla, and then layered over and under her voice is 5 more instances of her voice singing in harmony at different pitches, one voice for each of her heads.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Helios is the personification of the sun, who possesses cows separated into herds They reside on the island of Thrinacia, and there are seven herds with fifty cows in each herd. Circe actually warns Odysseus about these cows in the original story, as they are 'holy cattle' and cannot breed.
Helios is extremely protective of these cows because of their holy status, as he cannot replenish their numbers.
After Eurolychus and the crew kill his cattle, Helios threatens to drag the sun into the underworld and shine it among the dead (which would cause the dead to flee from the underworld and into the world of the living and cause the world of the living to freeze over) unless retribution is made. He tells this to Zeus, who is then shouldered with the task of dealing out punishment to Odysseus and his men.
Zeus gives Ody the choice, one life for many, or many lives for one, a decision he has made before, a few times at this point. Only this time, he makes the opposite choice, choosing to spare his own life in exchange for the rest of his men. (In Homers story there was no choice, Zeus killed all of his men by throwing a lightning bolt into his ship. Its unknown why he spared Ody, but it might have been because he had slight affection for him, or rather his daughter's affection towards him.)
Also really sad fact, when Penelope is talking to him in Thunder Bringer, it isn't Penelope, its the Siren pretending to be Penelope, because its been so long he's forgotten what his wife sounds like.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. There are many motifs in EPIC but one of the most prominent is the "Danger" motif, that you hear when danger is close. You can hear it best at behind Eury talking during Mutiny. It shows up a lot, but one of the most creative ways is during ruthlessness. When PO-SEI_DON is chanted in Ruthlessness, the "SEI-DON" mimics the cadence of the Danger motif. Also when Odysseus's men call out "CAPTAIN! CAPTAIN!" its also in the cadence of the danger motif. Another example of motifs, is when Ody is telling Penelope what he did to get home, you can hear the motif for the three hardest parts of his journey as he tells her, starting after he says 'Left a trial of red on every island!'
"Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves!"
"Thun-der Bringer!"
"But I'm not sorry for loving you..!"
Also in Suffering, we hear Penelope said, in the classic "Pen-elop-eeeee" but in all other instances, when her name is said, you hear a viola in the background.
That viola is absent in suffering, subconsciously telling your brain that something isn't quite right, but you cant place it.
And in Hold them Down you can hear that Viola in the background, mimicking the same way Odysseus says "NOOOOOOOOoooooo!" in Keep Your Friends Close
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. As much as Poseidon is God of the Sea, he is also the God of Equine Beasts, aka horses.
When Troy was created, it was Poseidon who helped build its great impenetrable walls, but ultimately when the war came, Poseidon sided with the Greeks NOT the Trojans.
The Trojans didn't think that the Trojan Horse would be a trick, because they thought it was an offering to Poseidon, given to the city by the Greeks so that they might earn some of Poseidon favor back. To use it as a trap would not only be cowardly but also incredibly stupid to risk the wrath of a God.
And as the Trojan Horse was seen as a cowardly attack, using the very symbol of Poseidon, a horse to trick the city of Troy, he had every right to be pissed. It was a huge slap in the face to him, even after he helped them win the war.
but he did nothing in retaliation.
And how was his mercy on the Greeks repaid?
With his son being blinded.
Had Poseidon done something to the Greeks for their use of his symbol in tricking the Trojans, his son may still have his eye.
Hence, Ruthlessness is Mercy upon ourselves.
Also, Ody is a half demigod on his mothers side, and Hermes is a distant relative, but because he is twice removed from the olympian he is a mortal. As a mortal, he could never kill a God, its just not possible, hence Poseidon saying "You can't kill me."
However, Poseidon's trident was crafted by the cyclopes during the Titanomachy (that 10 year war I mentioned before) specifically to maim and kill Gods, because some Gods defected to the side of the Titans.
So while Odysseus could never kill Poseidon, as a demi god and with a weapon designed specifically to kill Gods, he could definitely do damage.

32:45 yup Ody and his misplaced dad jokes. the man simply can't help himself xD There's a fan theory that Polyphemus planned to let Ody and his crew go up until Ody said: "I'm so glad we see eye to eye."
He's just trolling poor Polyphemus for real, after breaking into his home and killing his favorite sheep no less.

The hand dropping is my favourite scene in any animation at 7:20 ish because it relays the unsaid part out loud in such a graceful manner.
