More gears. More problems. I've had 2 speed for 11 years. No problem with gears. The bike is light with less gears. Perfect for whizzing around London. I don't tour, so no issues. 👍🏼

The problem with the 12 speed is that with the exception of 1st gear and 12th gear, the remaining gear range on the 12 speed is essentially the same as the 6 speed.  Personally I do not care about all those incremental gears in between and in fact there is some overlap.  The six speed is perfect.

I own both and think the 6 speed is perfect setup.

I love my 2019 H6R. It is the perfect Brompton for me!

6-Speed was the best compromise: it could do almost all up and downhills and still had a significantly simpler derailer, less sprockets and better gear ratio distribution without overlapping... Sure the 12 can do more but I do miss that genius simplicity of the 6...

6 speed is great. Sturmey Archey internal gear hub is finicky, but they’re amazing when you stop at a traffic light, and you forgot to lower your gear. 6 speed setup is very easy to learn.

I dunno. Just bought a new-to-me 6spd, and kinda like it. I've not tried any of the other brompton drive trains, but the 2-sprocket derailleur is like a perfect half step on the 3spd hub.

I bought my 6 speed 2 years ago and I still absolutely love it. If you think it belongs to the past, well that's your opinion. I don't care.

When I think about how I actually use my 6speed I realise that the main value of the derailleur shift to me is to extend the gear range of the hub. I do use the middle gears but not in a disciplined fashion. One gear for covering ground and one for attempting the hills that don't make me dismount on sight, and I'm enjoying my day 🙂
No plans to struggle with 12!

It's quite easy to go 6 speed to 9 speed. 12,14,17T 10 speed sprockets, a friction shifter and 10 speed chain and chainring. Nearly the range of a 12 speed, but no overlap.

“Advanced” rear triangle is cracking even in steel version.
I am OK with my M6R❤
Actually, it’s M10R now with wide range 5 speed Sturmey-Archer hub. With 36T chainring I can climb any mountainous road❤

I bought a used 6 speed and it came with a 46 tooth front ring. Works brilliantly for everything I have come across on my rides so far.

The main advantage of the 12- speed system (with four sprockets) defenitely is that there is much less need to shift the rear hub, and thus allow you to mainly cycle in the second hub gear, which has the least internal friction and thus the best rendiment.
I really love my 12-speed C-line!

I love my 6-speed C-Line electric. The gears feel great when I turn the battery off. I can ride it "acoustic" until I get to hills I can't handle on my own, or my legs start giving out.

I have custom M10R from 2015 with 10sp (5 internal S-A + 2sp external), plus 36T chainring and it covers everything from flats to 20 incline slopes.
So, if 6sp is not enough for you, consider changing rear hub to Sturmey-Archer SRF5(w), w stands for wide range.
It’s like 120 USD for the kit and maybe you’ll pay another 30 USD to re-lace rear wheel. You got yourself 10sp brompton for 150 bucks with lower gearing. If still not wide enough,  change front chainring to 40 or even 36 teeth and fly any uphill.

The new 4-speed has a narrower gear range than the A-Line's 3-speed.

It would be good to compare these transmissions with the 8-speed IGH on the G-Line for over-all ratios.

As an owner of a 2019 6-speed, I normally only use the upper three, and I hardly know what I have the low gears for!!! Only riding up an absurd hill, I have ever used the low gears, and I could walk faster than ride! I have found a new front tooth ring with 58 teeth (from 50) for a little more use of the low gears and a higher speed on a flat road. I absolutely have no idea what to use 12 gears for, with that low speed range of a Brompton! My former Superlight bike has been modified down to around 9 kilos and still with my mudguards! A brompton is for transport as folded, not for its ride!

Thank u for the video loving my purchases from u guys :)

From Asia you are able to buy a 7 speed 16" chain-gear wheel and a single shifter, fitting the Brompton standard mounts.
It weighs less, it gives a direct up and down shift/gearing and a much less complicated use.  I'm very tempted from my 6 speed, I admit.  My bike is 2019 Superlight 6 speed M6LX model.      Finn. Denmark
