JaidenAnimations' Cat Is Broken? Veterinarian Reacts to Tostada

JaidenAnimations' cat Tostada is not broken; she's just being a cat. As a
veterinarian & veterinary behaviorist, I break down WHY she does every weird, adorable thing Jaiden describes.
Is forgetting the stairs normal? Why does she headbutt mouths, fear Frasier after a haircut, or is braver when the sun goes down? Let's explain the behavior behind the comedy.

This video uses short clips for commentary/education under fair use. All original animation belongs to JaidenAnimations.

Question for you: Which Tostada quirk does YOUR cat do? Tell me below and I'll explain it in a future video!

Someone on the original video also pointed out the possibility of a very minor brain injury. Tostada was originally found in a dumpster as a kitten; it’s very possible she was either thrown in there by a human or might have been dropped in there by her mother, and either situation would’ve easily led to her getting a concussion along the way.

It’s clearly not serious enough to cause her any serious decline in functioning, and it probably happened so long ago that she’s never known anything else and just adapted to it. But it might explain some of her quirks (which do seem similar to another YouTube cat, Puddles, who has a much more serious TBI).

I had a similarly broken cat. He was orange (because of course he was) and his official vet record said, AND I QUOTE, "incompatible with life in absence of human intervention"

Someone in Jaiden's comments theorized Tostada may have a condition that makes her pupils dilated most times which may mean she has poor vision during the day (and thus relies on smell more often). This would also explain why she's suddenly brave at night, since she can now see. Of course, there's no way to know without a vet checking her over, but I thought it was an interesting theory.

My mother and I, who both have worked with animals all of our lives, agree that there’s something going on with Tostada’s brain with how bad her balance is described in the videos.

I would note that Jaiden is rather new to not just cats as pets but, also the concept, as she has been allergic most of her life. So her only real idea of normal pet cats are the other 2 that her room-mate has. So anything that she might attribute as weird for a cat might just be her judging based on the other 2 cats in the house.

I remember her saying that tostada also has some minor balancing issues, so I have a suspicion that there is something slightly different with her brain, but I’ve only ever heard Jaiden talk about her. I haven’t actually seen more than a clip or two of tostada plus a few pictures, so I can’t say for certain. Still, probably worth noting.

My cat... She is such a eldritch abomination she eats the medicine outright, she literally doesn't care. In her brain medicine = food therefore Consume without a second thought.

Considering that before Tostada, Jaiden only had her two birds, Ari and Tofu, it's no wonder she's surprised by normal cat behavior, but it's lovely nonetheless 😅

Anyway, it's always great to hear an expert's perspective! Cats are smarter than we think, and watching them develop their own personalities in a safe environment makes me very happy 🥲💕

basically, Toastada isn't necessarily a weird cat, but cats are weird to adjust to if you've never had them lol. very good video. Toastada reminds me of my little Ladybug, who learned to talk basically 24/7 probably because im so chatty with her. it's like having a full conversation with a babbling kid lol

My cat is 10 now, and over the years she’s developed habits and routines. Nothing harmful to her or to us, just little routines that she does that are hilarious. Every night she does a goodnight lap around the house, going to each person’s bedroom, getting a quick cuddle session and moving onto the next person

Our cat is like Tostada, she has zero interest in our food, which is funny since when she was a stray, she'd go crazy over leftovers, but now the ONLY thing she enjoy, is butter! And I'm glad because it's the only way I can give her any kind of medication

Regarding smells and vet visits (8:00 onward). One thing that I found REALLY helpful when I had two cats, and would need to take one to the vet (he had a congenital form of dilated cardiomyopathy so we'd do fairly regular visits) would be to take along his "happy blanket", and leave it in the car. When he came out from the visit, we'd rub the blanket all over him, let him lay on it for awhile just so that the vet stink would be reduced. Mishka (the other cat) was also fond of this blanket, so it would smell like her too. We'd legit let him calm down and enjoy his happy blanket for a solid 45 minutes or so before going back home. Mishka would give him a few sniffs, maybe a side eye, but there was generally peace and everyone was happy-ish. Sadly he eventually passed from the DCM, but we gave him the best life we could. Mishka on the otherhand, a tortie, was hellbound on living through pure spite, surviving a black widow bite and more, until the age of 23. Unfortunately stomach cancer plus advanced kidney disease eventually got her in the end.

I do agree that most of it is just being a cat, but I can also understand the gap between what people think having a cat is like, and what having a cat is actually like.

I did have a similar issue with my own cat. I've tried to make it clear that I will respond nicely to requests for help but if she's screaming at the top of her lungs and doens't actually need help then I'm going to go back and sit down and if she persists I will yell NO.

I feel like some cats, like Frasier as described, have a sort of 'dominant but friendly' personality. "You WILL be my friend." Like they display a mix of some aggressive/dominant behaviors while also trying to cuddle/interact constantly until they feel 'respected' or whatever

2:37 I do think there is a chance the cat doesn’t understand “object permanence” yet. It’s a concept where things still exist even though you don’t see them. (It’s why parents play peekaboo with their children. It’s not just a way of playing; it’s to teach them the concept of object permanence.)

After seeing all these comments we gotta let Jaiden know about this video so she can get Tostada examined for any brain injuries!!

I had a cat that was very skittish during the day, and not at night, and he had constant "orb-eyes" similar tostada, though not quite as big... my vet from back then told me that he had some day-blindness, that it is normal in cats due to ligthsensitivity, but his was just a bit worse, and that he was fine, just skittish because he couldn't see well... he did get less skittish after I started keeping the blinds down during the day... but I've never heard of this from other cat owners I know... so I still wonder about that...
edit: I forgot to mention that I'm not english... so I guess there might be a bit of language or something involved in this😅

I had a birman when I was younger. She was very good at patiently waiting for me to let her go when trying to feed her a pill so she could spit it back up. I would rub her little throat to get her to swallow the pill and eventually go "surely, she swallowed it by now" and no.
I wrestled her for an entire week after she had surgery, and on the last day, I noticed that if you gave her glutonous little fluff a treat - then a pill - and then another treat; she would INHALE all of it! No hesitation! She didn't even have time to taste the treats or the medicine.
