I think the best part about this film is easily Stallone and Assante constantly trying to one up each other in who can say “law” in a more ridiculous way.

The ABC robot is the best looking and coolest part of this film.

"This is Dredd, mon! Truly Dredd." King Willie loved this film. Anyway, bumping the comments up in hopes of getting another commentary soon!

"I am the law!"

Cue laughter from all criminals everywhere

Fun fact: Armand Assante also plays Stallone's brother in 'Paradise Alley', Sly's directorial debut.

If Stallone hadn’t taken off the helmet it would have been a great interpretation of the comic as the city is more accurate than the later film. Production design is great.
Hopefully one day we’ll see the uncut version of this film?!!

Judge Dredd is played by Sly Stallone who co-starred in The Specialist alongside Sharon Stone, who starred in Basic Instinct directed by Paul Verhoeven, who in turn directed Showgirls.
So do a commentary track on Showgirls is what I'm saying. The connections are there. PLEASE!

If you don’t have a copy of the film, it’s on 5Spike on Monday next week at 21:00.

Re your suggestion, Stallone and Assante actually played brothers in Sly's directional debut, Paradise Alley (1978).  That film was produced by Edward R Pressman, who also produced Judge Dredd.

I finally read the William Wisher script, and I can say that the film was pretty much screwed from the start. The only way it could have worked was if they did a page one rewrite. All the problems in the final film originated from that script: Dredd removes his helmet, gets framed and loses his job, spends a good chunk out of costume, teams up with the comedy relief Fergie, and they do the whole shock reveal that he's a clone. Also it makes some odd changes of its own like making Rico a hulking mutant caused by mining a toxic fuel source on Aspen. However, it's slightly better than the film we got. Dredd wears a uniform and helmet in the third act as he leads a bunch of deputised citizens against Rico's fascist militia. It has a lot more references to elements from the comics like the Block's being named after pop culture artists and characters, the Fatties show up, and there's some attempt at satire. The Lawgiver uses a dial to change the ammo type. And above all else, there's no "Double Whammy" or the "I knew you'd say that" one liner.

Josh Trank is attempting a comeback with Fonzo, his Al Capone biopic, starring Tom Hardy.

The Land Rover made for this i saw in Bedford at Goldington Road in 1995/6 at a small car show.

Demolition Man's John Spartan fell into 2000AD

My favourite piece about this film is seeing the massive red robot guy. Can’t remember what they are called but it looks amazing.

"I'm a clone baby." - Judge Dredd, probably

I remember when this film was announced. There was a paragraph dedicated to it in the 1993 summer issue of CVG magazine. I was in Majorca and it was announced that Stallone would be patrolling the streets of Mega City One in the Summer of 95. Within this article it was announced that James Cameron's Spider-Man would follow True Lies.

Stallone called the shots on the film not Danny Cannon
