Scarborough Fair is an old folk song. It was not written by Simon & Garfunkel, but is much older. Scarborough had a Fair in Medieval times that was for 44 days each year in the summer, the longest in the country. In effect this made it a summer seaside resort, long before it was officially made one by the discovery of the Spa waters in the 17th century. Most Fairs lasted one week only. At Scarborough ships brought in goods from all over Europe, exotic spices, cloths, wine from Gascony in southern France which was rule by the English Kings. Also lots of salted fish for all the Yorkshire monasteries. A fine green glazed pottery was made in Scarborough during the 14th/15th centuries which has been found in places all around the coasts of Europe. Scarborough Castle was a most important Royal stronghold, with a safe harbour, handily placed half way between London & Edinburgh. Only Dover had more money spent on it in the 13th century. Before the castle was built there had been a prehistoric settlement on the headland, & the Romans built a lookout signal station there in the 4th century. The steps were new a couple of hundred years ago when they were created, like Newcastle was new in the 12th century. They are Victorian at the latest. Newborough in Scarborough was a new walled area added to the original town in the 13th/14th century. Very long trains used to bring visitors to Scarborough in Victorian times, & this is where those trains stopped & started, away from the main railway station platforms.

It's the Yorkshire Scarborough Fair the song's about, we learned to sing it in St Peter's juniors in Wallsend & my grandad, born in Beverley was dead proud we sang a Yorkshire song so he taught me On Ilkley Moor Bah Tat as well !
It kept the dog out of the front room (presumably he couldn't stand the racket😅)

My parents live behind the railway line, we lost Mum last year and now Dad is in palliative care - but they loved to sit on the bench and watch the steam trains go by - happy memories, thankyou for sharing this xx

The traditional song 'Scarborough Fair' comes from WAY back in history... earliest reference is 1670.

Scarborough Fair is an English traditional folk song. Folk singer Martin Carthy had a version in the 1960s, which he taught to Paul Simon when Simon was hanging around the London folk club scene in about 1964. Martin still sings a (different) version and has lived just up the road, in Robin Hoods Bay, for the last 50 years.

Hi James and Helen, apparently it's an experimental traffic regulation order, being trialed for 18 months.  Scarborough council were presented with a petition of 1,128 signatures on the 3 rd of October 2024 in opposition to the order by local businesses who said that the parking restrictions would have a negative impact on the local businesses. A moderate overnight charge was suggested by local business owners who suggested that Royal Albert drive would be the best area to allow overnight parking.
