Externalise power is shifting, alliances are being reassessed, and the global order is becoming increasingly multipolar. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference session in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar outlined India’s approach to navigating this rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.

Jaishankar explained why India and other emerging and middle powers are increasingly pursuing de-risking, diversification and multi-alignment, rather than placing all their strategic bets on one major power. He described this approach as “advancing by hedging” — working with the United States, China, Europe, Russia and other partners wherever interests converge.

Jaishankar also questioned whether India should remain confined to the traditional “middle power” category, pointing to India’s economic growth, demographic strength and expanding global responsibilities.

From India-EU relations and the Russia-Ukraine conflict to BRICS, AI, supply-chain resilience and the changing role of the United States, Jaishankar offered a wide-ranging assessment of India’s place in the emerging world order.
