Across the sea from Hokkaido to Kyoto.
We are a couple in our 60s traveling around Japan in our camper after retirement. On our previous journey, we had to return to Hokkaido after one of us became unwell.
After taking some time to recover and watching the seasons change, we are setting off on a new journey.
Fifty years ago, we visited Kyoto on a school trip. A simple wish to see Kyoto once again became one of the reasons we decided to begin this journey through Western Japan.
This journey begins in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
From Otaru, we board the Shin Nihonkai Ferry and wake up to a morning at sea. After about 20 hours on the ferry, we arrive in Maizuru, Kyoto.
We try not to pack too much into our schedule. There is no need to rush.
For us, traveling is not just about visiting famous sights. It is about eating, sleeping, and spending ordinary days in each place we visit.
We enjoy traveling as if we were living there — our own “life on the road.”
Taking each step together and sharing laughter in the ordinary moments.
Maybe it is because we love these simple moments together that we always want to travel again.
Our journey through Western Japan begins here.
We will slowly make our way south along the Sea of Japan.
Next time: Kyoto by the Sea.
