Some people will die without seeing the largest wooden Gothic church in Europe. And it stands in a village near Krosno.
A flint mine dating back nearly 6,000 years, where the marks of deer antler pickaxes can still be seen on the walls. A settlement older than the Roman Republic, with houses arranged in neat rows like a city map. A cave with traces of Neanderthals. A castle with 99 towers and turrets that could have stood in Bavaria, yet stands in the Opole forest.
Twenty sites: from the Mysia Wieża (Mysia Tower) above Gopło Lake, through wooden churches, caves, and rock labyrinths, to the Białowieża Forest, where the bison has returned, and a valley in the Tatra Mountains where almost no one turns, even though everyone passes by.
You can reach most by car, a few by train, and a few by foot. At each location: when is the best time to visit and what to watch out for.
