Dude, this is off topic but I had to tell you. I have been playing DQX NONSTOP since I found your video and guides on how to play. I started in June and I have over 300 hours and got all the expansions. Thank you so much!!!!!

Dq4 has always been one of my favorites. I can remember getting  it on the ds as a kid and being so hooked. My uncle introduced me to the series and i played some on the nes. But getting to play my own copy anywhere meant i was playing nonstop. 4 and 5 will always have a special place in my heart

There are DQ games held in higher regard, but this entry to me is my favorite. So so so good, love the chapter system and how they tie together. Well written too.

Awesome video dude! Looking forward to diving into DQ4 soon after I wrap up 7 reimagined and 5 on PS2

Great video dude, you put a lot of love into this!

Love love love this game, it's something special for sure. I really hope we get a 3D version of it sometime in the future

I played four along with the rest of the Zenithian Trilogy and I loved how intense the final boss was and especially Tornekos & Heros story, unlike the other games I really wasn't suspecting how long the final boss was going to take, but I loved the story of Torneko just because he was a father trying to open a shop, and how hero reunited with his girlfriend at the end.

Love this game.

I love how it can be a good tutorial for someone new to Dragon Quest.
Ragnar teaches the basics.
Alena teaches the importance of a balanced party.
Torneko teaches the adventuring/economy tutorial?
And the Sisters are the final exam.

There is party chat in the Android and iOS version of Dragon Quest IV.  HIGHLY RECOMMEND

DQ IV was the first one I sank my teeth into such an amazing game how they let each chapter simmer for each character Party Chat took the adventure to the next level.

Great retrospective. I had DQ4 on DS then mobile as I sold DS version which I regret.. however I will own it again, yeah Aleena’s story was amazing of not being put in someone’s box. Fantastic vid Dukey.

Just finished the post game on the ds version yesterday.  Loved the game and cant wait to jump into 5 after taking a week or 2 DQ break.

very good look back at my personal favorite Dragon Quest game.

I love DQIV for many of the reasons you said. Psaro is still my favorite DQ villain; he is understandable, yet you really want to go after him because he massacres your entire village. Your party is also wonderful. Alena, specifically, is one of my favorite DQ characters: she's just so fun. The chapter system is a great way to introduce all of the party members, too. DQ tends to get knocked for being too unwilling to break from traditions, but I don't see other games putting you in the shoes of a shopkeeper. That shows a true confidence in what it's doing, and everyone loves Torneko for it. DQ is absolutely innovative, but not for its own sake; rather, when the scenario demands it, and I love that.

The one thing that keeps it from the number 1 DQ spot for me is the lack of gameplay options. Yes, you can change party members, but they're always going to develop the same way, whereas other top games in the series give you a bit more choice in character growth or party configuration, in III's and V's cases.

Love your videos, dude!

I just finished DQ4 for the first time and loved it. I was amazed that it was originally on the NES. I'm sure it felt revolutionary in 1990!

Haha thats so interesting (and probably to the strength of the games cast) but I love the twins! My final party in my last playthrough was Elena, Meena, Psaro, and the Hero

Just finished DQIV for the first time a few days ago!

Whenever I do a DQ Tier list, I have to change it at times because one day, some game is A tier, next day its S, and so on.

But Dragon Quest IV has always been S-tier to me because of the side characters, not to mention the hero/heroin is amazing. I love all of them, and if I ever went on an adventure, this would be the perfect cast that I would want to join. Plus I love Psaro, and his transformation in the NES version during the battle was unique at the time.

If they ever do a remaster, which is what it needs (so does 5 and 6, and I love all 3), I want the DQ11 side quests and alchemy system.  Plus I would love for quests where its just Main Character and Ragnar, MC and Alena, MC and Kiryl, etc. And absolutely MC and Psaro. Also have a system where the other side characters get to uniquely interact with others, similar to Xenoblade Chronicles (DQ6 should do this also).

This game has one of Toriyama's best Hero designs next to 8!
