Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Gremlins (1984).

Gremlins is a 1984 American fantasy comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday and Frances Lee McCain, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character.

When Billy Peltzer is given a strange but adorable pet named Gizmo for Christmas, he inadvertently breaks the three important rules of caring for a Mogwai, unleashing a horde of mischievous gremlins on a small town.

We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the incredible visual effects, the puppetry and why we think the blend of horror and comedy works so well in this film.

I grew up with this movie, and I can never see a stair lift chair without thinking of Mrs. Deagle flying out the window.😅

The concept of Gremlin came from a real life urban legend during WW2. During the war, equipments and machines at times malfunctioned, especially aircrafts. When the malfunction seemingly occured outta nowhere the crew jokingly said that the machines must be sabotaged by 'gremlins'. That's how it started.

Also, I'm now 30 yrs old but yes, I'm still wishing for my own Mogwai for Christmas 😂

This movie was one of the main reasons we now have a PG-13 movie rating.

Mrs. Deagle: "My heart!"
Me: What heart?! You wanted to cook a dog in a dryer!

Fun connection: In "The Goonies" (1985) the Sheriff refers to a prank about "little creatures that multiply when you throw water on them"

Chris Columbu wrote both.

P.S. Gremlins 2 is totally bonkers! Nutty as a fruit cake and really sends itself up. You'll love it

Fun fact. Mrs Peltzer, Billy's mom was also Lorraine's mom in Back To The Future

"Fix your eyebrows then start talking shit" had me dying lol. Denise is NOT someone I want to tango with.

The dog Barney in the movie was really named Mushroom. While filming Gremlins he thought Gizmo was a real creature.

It's amazing that as a child, Corey Feldman killed Gremlins, Jason, AND Vampires.

Little Cousins: uncle, did you had a "minions" movie like when you were kids?
Me: having horribly flashbacks of nightmares when i saw this as a kid

Apparently, the idea for Gizmo being tortured on the dart board came from the crew, solely because working with Gizmo's animatronic was an absolute pain. You have to remember, this was the 80's, an animatronic that small meant to be that expressive was fragile and bound to break.

The voice of Gizmo was Howie Mandel, still amazes me how he can produce a voice like that.

"He's a badass here, he's a badass in LOST BOYS..."
and he's a badass on guitar. 😂

"He's so tiny."
No kidding. The mogwai animatronics really stretched the limits what could be done with animatronics at the time, and drove the puppeteers crazy because of its small size. That's why Gizmo gets tortured this much in both this and the sequel.
