The Magic of Fishing

The Magic of Fishing

Following a bitterly cold and wet winter week, my prospects of a brilliant fishing weekend away didn't feel strong. But thanks to a bit of luck and lots of local advice, I finally got to visit the famous Throop fisheries in Dorset, which I'd read and heard about since I was young lad growing up in Sheffield.

The Dorset Stour at Throop - near the abandoned and rather spooky Throop Mill - is a legendary piece of river for us anglers, made famous over the years for big fish of all varieties, but particularly chub! And chub are one of my favourite species of fish to catch, so when I realised this beautiful river is available to anyone on a day ticket (links below but available online or from local tackle shops), I made plans for a solo, winter fishing adventure!

The first day dawned with stunning blue skies and sunshine. So, with the river still high, I opted to try fishing for pike on the Throop Mill Pond. I met lots of friendly people and enjoyed the day, but couldn't wait to get on the River Stour the following morning - where all my Throop fishing dreams came true!

Throop day tickets are available in advance (not on the bank) from Ringwood & District Anglers Association and local tackle shops. You will also need to rent or buy a key from the local shops to access gates, and need a valid fishing rod licence of course. See links below.

As always, sit back, relax and enjoy.
