This episode was patterned after a WW2 movie “Enemy Below” starring Robert Mitchum.

It's a little thing now, but Uhura passes from Comms to Navigation. It shouldn't have to be said, but she outranks a significant part of the bridge crew and the ship.

This episode was always considered a submarine episode.

"In a different reality, I could have called you, 'friend'. "

I once heard the original series referred to as "unwatchable." I love seeing young viewers proving that wrong.

Styles was clearly guilty of insubordination to his superior officers.

For context, when this show was produced and broadcast(1966-69) North Korean troops were launching infiltration raids across the DMZ simply to kill Americans and South Koreans.
Like the Romulans in this episode, their purpose was to probe their enemies' preparedness and resolve.

"We are creatures of duty, Captain " on the one hand he is referring to his people.  On the other, he's talking about Kirk and himself.

Great idea to celebrate Star Trek's 60th Anniversary! Love it! Thank you❤🖖

Pink smoke is one of the deadliest substances in Hollywood.

Tomlinson..victom of coolant poisoning. Just like Scotty's Nephew in Wrath of Kahn.

Mark Leonard held the record for Star Trek aliens.  He played the romulan commander in this; Sarek, Spock's father;  and a klingon captain in Star Trek the motion picture.

Episode even includes the "radio silence" sequence from The Enemy Below (1957).  The German sub, lurking beneath the American destroyer, goes silent, to avoid being detected by the surface ship's sonar.  Here, though, the vessels are reversed.  It is the Enterprise which gives itself away.

One of the "moments" in this episode was when Uhura took over as Navigator. Demonstrated that a Black female officer could seamlessly operate core mechanical and navigational systems highlighting her authority and capability as a top-tier command-track officer. Something that is now taken for granted in shows these days but rare when Star Trek first aired. This show also had the first inter-racial kiss shown on television. Kind of strange to think of it isn't it?

This. IS. The best Star Trek episode ever written. It has everything. A ticking clock. A powerful antagonist. Racism. Redemption. Strong female characters. Star Trek canon. And the perfect book end of emotions. Joy of Marriage. Despair of death.
We don't write these anymore.

Mark Leonard who played Sarek and the Romulan commander was also the Klingon in command of the Klingon battle cruiser in The Motion Picture

This was the only episode of the show where the weapons were weren’t fired from the bridge.  It was necessary for the plot.

An episode so good they effectively remade it for The Wrath of Khan. And ultimately it's all about those performances. Because, compared to today, they didn't have much else.

Believe I read somewhere that the reason they gave most of the Romulans helmets was because they didn’t have enough ears to go around.
