Perhaps it was last-minute nerves or some underlying suspicion that led Sirius Black to Peter Pettigrew’s safehouse, but the moment he found it empty, he knew he had made a horrible mistake. He immediately apparated to Godric’s Hollow and found a nightmare. The front door had been blown open with powerful magic and on the floor of the living room, wand still clutched in his hand, was the body of his childhood friend, James. But Sirius didn’t have a moment to mourn. He heard Lily’s scream upstairs and rushed up the steps, only to be greeted by the dark-robed silhouette of Voldemort himself. The Dark Lord, with his red eyes burning with hatred, had his wand trained on James’ wife and son.

SIRIUS BLACK: Stupefy!

Sirius’ spell struck, sending Voldemort crumbling to the floor.

SIRIUS BLACK: Lily! Run!

Lily wasted no time. She grabbed Harry and ran past the wizard as the Dark Lord rose to his feet, already recovering from the stunning spell. Sirius raised his wand in unison with his enemy.

VOLDEMORT: Avada kedavra!

SIRIUS BLACK: Expelliarmus!

The two wizards’ spells clashed with a monolithic boom. Sirius knew he wasn’t powerful enough to defeat Voldemort, but he didn’t need to be. He just needed time. Enough time. Just enough time. By the time his defenses collapsed and Voldemort’s curse struck true, Lily had already taken Harry and fled. Sirius Black breathed his last, his final thought one of contentment that he managed to rescue his friend’s family.

The murder of James Potter and attempted murder of his family sent shockwaves through the Wizarding World. Voldemort was forced into isolation, gathering his forces to him to plot their next move, as the Ministry hunted him like a dog. Before long, Aurors led by Alastair “Mad Eye” Moody and Albus Dumbledore stormed the Dark Lord’s sanctuary. Although the attack led to many deaths on both sides, it ended with Voldemort and his top lieutenants, Bellatrix Lestrange, Lucius Malfoy, Barty Crouch Jr, Peter Pettigrew, and Fenrir Greyback being captured. Although Lucius would manage to convince the Ministry he was under the effects of the Imperius curse, he and his family would be under strict surveillance until further notice.

The trial of Voldemort was the largest the Wizarding World had seen in many years. His crimes and those of his followers were heaped upon them for hundreds of witnesses and testimonies. Among them was Horace Slughorn who stood against his former student. However, overcome by his personal fear, Slughorn’s testimony was called into question with some even disregarding his accounts due to conflicting and vague details. Dumbledore wasn’t among them though. He asked Mad Eye Moody to investigate what Slughorn knew.

Unsurprisingly, the Dark Lord and the Death Eaters on trial were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment to Azkaban with Voldemort himself being subjected to the Dementor’s Kiss. With a weaving gasp, the enemy of all wizards and witches was stripped of all power and identity, reduced to a withered body left to rot in its cell.

Cold rain poured over the gravestones of St. Jerome’s Church. Lily teared up to see such a large turnout for James’ funeral, clutching the sleeping body to her chest. Lupin stood at her side, holding her umbrella as he looked down at the earth where his friend lay.

REMUS LUPIN: Lily, if you and Harry need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.

LILY POTTER: Thank you, Remus.

SEVERUS SNAPE: Lily.

There were more than a few curious murmurs when the funeral attendees saw Severus Snape arrive. Many knew about the animosity he shared for James Potter, but no one dared speak up or confront him. Severus met Lily’s eye with sorrow. Seeing her old friend prompted her to lean in to hug him, though Snape was mindful of the baby in her arm.

LILY POTTER: Thank you for coming, Severus.

SEVERUS SNAPE: Of course. Did they find Pettigrew?

REMUS LUPIN: Not yet. Who knows where the little rat scurried off to?

LILY POTTER: The Ministry is placing Harry and I in a safehouse until he is found. They think he may try to harm us in retaliation for… his imprisonment.

SEVERUS SNAPE: If I may be so bold, you and Harry could stay with me. I know you have more than enough to tend to his care, but raising a child is no easy task and my home has many protective barriers to keep you both safe.

LILY POTTER: I don’t want to burden you like that, Severus.

SEVERUS SNAPE: It is no burden if it is an offer. Please.

Lily looked at Snape and then down at her son as he slept.
