This New Evidence Just Gave Spinosaurus a Serious Upgrade
Spinosaurus may have just gotten its biggest upgrade yet. New fossil evidence is once again changing what we thought we knew about one of the strangest and most controversial dinosaurs ever discovered.
For more than a century, Spinosaurus has been reconstructed again and again—from the giant sail-backed predator of Jurassic Park III to a short-legged aquatic hunter with dense bones and a paddle-like tail. But new discoveries are making this dinosaur even stranger. A newly described Spinosaurus species, *Spinosaurus mirabilis*, preserves an enormous blade-like crest rising from the top of its skull—the tallest known crest of any predatory dinosaur.
And that’s only part of the story.
In this video, we explore the constantly changing science of Spinosaurus, including its lost original fossils, the discovery of Baryonyx, the controversial 2014 reconstruction, the paddle tail found in 2020, new research into its bite force, possible salt glands, its bizarre fish-trapping jaws, and the ongoing argument over whether Spinosaurus was an underwater hunter or a giant wading predator.
The deeper scientists look into Spinosaurus, the stranger this animal becomes—and the version we have today probably won’t be the last.
