In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee introduced the world to his new idea for a decentralized internet, expressed through an online portal that he called the "World Wide Web." This digital superhighway was accessed through a program called a "web browser," and an arms race for who could be the "best" one, quickly began. The first one to gain popularity was a little browser called "Mosaic." But despite its relatively short life, its influence still strongly lives on many decades later, popping up in today's web browsers in places that you would not have even imagined to look.

This video tells the story of Mosaic: the Internet's Ghost.

Ah yes, the Mosaic Godzilla. Here's me learning that Firefox is directly related to Netscape Navigator.

I'm 41 and basically a fossil in Internet Years, but although I have no clue how old you are, it's actually pretty nice to see a younger dude competently covering all the things from the 90's internet that hit me in the nostalgia spot every time. It's easy to tell when someone genuinely cares about the topics they cover in their content and you have my approval, possibly-young-possibly-not Squid of the Nation.

When he joked that he "invented the internet" in the 2000 Presidential campaign (which backfired badly), Al Gore was referring to the fact that he lead the effort to get federal funding to create Mosaic, the backbone of all later browsers.

Swiss, not Swedish. CERN is Swiss.

3:17 The CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire/European Council for Nuclear Research), nowadays known as European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is located on the border between France and Switzerland, a few miles away from Geneva.
It ISN'T in Sweden.

Omg. Every time I think I can't feel any older, in walks NationSquid to put in my place. 😂

I still use Firefox just because I'm not a fan of almost every browser being chromium based.

Sometimes I just sit and remember the mid 90s internet. It makes me happy to think about windows 95. It's like a warm hug.

That ad read gave me whiplash.. Great job on inserting yourself into that footage so seamlessly lol

Microsoft licensed Mosaic, and built Internet Explorer starting from their source code. I'm surprised you didn't mention that.

One of the biggest features that Firefox and every other browser had over ie6 back in the day was Tabbed Browsing. It took until IE7 for Microsoft to add that feature, along with plenty of security fixes for activex vulnerabilities.
