The bottle says soft, fluffy towels. So you poured it in every load, just like it said. And your towels feel like a dog biscuit, they are going gray, and the minute one gets damp it smells like a wet basement. So who is lying to you, you or the bottle? Here is the backwards part: the thing you added to make them soft is what made them stiff, and the extra detergent you added to get them clean is why they are not clean. That is not your fault. You did what the bottles told you.

A cotton towel is covered in thousands of little loops, and every one is a tiny drinking straw. A towel's job is to drink. Grandmama put it in one line: if it will not drink, it ain't a towel, it's a tablecloth. So your towel is not worn out. It is loaded.

WHY YOURS WENT BAD:
1. FABRIC SOFTENER coats every fiber in a thin oily film. It is wax on a sponge. The straws cannot drink, so it pushes water around your skin instead
2. TOO MUCH DETERGENT stays in the cotton and dries hard. That is the cardboard feeling
3. HARD WATER settles calcium into the cotton and makes it gritty
4. GRAY is dirt stuck to that coating. Your towel is holding every wash it ever had
5. YELLOW whites can be chlorine bleach reacting with body oil left in the fabric. Hotels use oxygen products for exactly that reason

THE HOTEL WAY, EVERY WASH: hot water, this is the load to spend the heat on. Soap only to the fill line, not the top of the cap. ÂĽ cup white vinegar in the fabric softener slot, which goes in at the rinse and carries out the soap left behind. Towels by themselves with room to move. Shake each one out before the dryer and take them out when they are just dry, because heat past dry is what makes them rough. No softener, no dryer sheets, ever.

ALREADY SMELLS: hot wash with 1 cup vinegar and no soap, then a second hot wash with ½ cup baking soda. Two separate washes, never together.

THE STRIP, for towels already loaded: gloves on. Tub half full of the hottest tap water, ¼ cup washing soda and ½ cup oxygen bleach stirred in until dissolved. Clean towels only, or you learn nothing from that water. Stir every half hour, four hours, then a hot wash with no detergent and an extra rinse. The water goes gray or brown, and that is years of softener coming out. Twice a year at most, never on colored towels you care about.

HONEST LIMITS: if the loops are worn flat or the edges fraying, stripping will not bring it back. That is wear. When a towel stops drying you, it is a rag now, and that is a promotion.

Lay a towel flat and drip a spoonful of water on it. Tell me in the comments: soaks, or beads? And what state you are in, because hard water changes everything. I read every one.
