Igor Danilevsky. Overt and Hidden Scandinavian Themes in the Tale of Bygone Years. (May 14, 2017)
The fourth lecture in the "Ancient Rus' and Scandinavia" series took place on May 14. Igor Danilevsky spoke on the topic: "Overt and Hidden Scandinavian Themes in the Tale of Bygone Years."
"The Tale of Bygone Years contains a number of stories that we perceive as 'our own,' 'native.' Meanwhile, many of them are more or less free adaptations of stories that ancient Russian chroniclers drew from the Bible, apocrypha, and other literary works known to them. A significant portion of these borrowings have Scandinavian roots. This is not surprising, as many of the first princes of Ancient Rus' were Scandinavians (at least on their mother's side). Some of these stories have long been recognized as Scandinavian (for example, the story of the death of Oleg the Prophet). Others "hide" their Scandinavian origins. These chronicle legends will be discussed here.
