1. Pirkei Darbi Eliezer 37: Jacob wanted to cross the Yavbek Pass and stay there. The angel said to him: Didn't you say so [before you set out for Haran], 'And of all that you give me a tenth, I will give it to you,' and don't you have sons and not give me a tenth? Jacob set aside four firstborns for four mothers [and the firstborn is not part of the tithe], leaving eight sons, starting with Simeon and ending with Benjamin in his mother's womb, and again starting with Simeon, and Levi went up as a holy tithe to the Lord... The angel Michael descended and took Levi and brought him up before the Lord, blessed be He, and said, "O Lord of the worlds, this is your lot and your portion." The Lord, blessed be He, stretched out His right hand and said that Levi and his sons would serve before Him on earth like the angels who serve in heaven. Michael before the Holy One: Those who serve the king, does he not give them prey for their food?! Therefore, he gave to the sons of Levi all the holy things that were offered to his name.
2. A. Numbers 8: From twenty-five years old and above, he shall enter the army of the army in the service of the Tent of Meeting: and from fifty years old he shall return from the army of service and serve no more: and he shall serve his brothers in the Tent of Meeting to keep watch and serve no more - Rashi: 'He shall not serve any more' - the work of carrying a burden on the shoulder, but he returns to locking gates and singing and loading carts. And this is 'and he shall serve his brothers' - with my brothers, as he translates it.
2. Rambam Kelei HaMikdash 3:8: And this [forced retirement] is only during the time when the Temple [the Tabernacle] was carried from place to place, and it is not a mitzvah that is practiced for generations. But for generations the Levite is not disqualified in years ... except in voice, when his voice deteriorates from old age ... and it seems to me that he is not disqualified except for singing, but he will be one of the gatekeepers.
3. Avot 5:21: 'Fifty years old for advice' - Bartanura: As it is said in Levites 'And at the age of fifty years he shall return from the army of service and shall no longer serve, but shall serve his brothers' - and what is the service to his brothers? He shall give them advice.
4. Rambam Sanhedrin 2:6: One should strive and examine and seek that they all be gray-haired [and seventy years old for return]. Yalkut Shimoni Titkasa: Moses was in Egypt forty years and in Midian forty years and provided for Israel forty years ... Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai engaged in prakmatia forty years and worked as a sage forty years and provided for Israel forty years. Rabbi Akiva served as a sage for forty years, taught Torah for forty years, and provided for Israel for forty years.
Megillah 32: Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says: If the elders say to you, “Remain in ruins, and the children build,” then remain in ruins and do not build, because the concealment of the elders is a building, and the building of the children is a concealment. And a sign of this is Rehoboam ben Solomon (1 Kings 12).
3. Genesis 2:3: And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it he rested from all his work which God created to do – Rashi in the Midrash: to do – to correct.
Avot 1:9: Love work – Rabbi Jonah: For idleness brings man to boredom and is the measure of illness… For in its fulfillment he will have rest.
Avot 1:9: Love work – Rabbi Jonah: For idleness brings man to boredom and is the measure of illness… For in its fulfillment he will have rest.
4. Sanhedrin 77: Man was created for work, as it is said, ‘Man is born for work,’ and I do not know whether he was created for work in the mouth or for work in the mouth? When he says, ‘Because I have constrained his mouth,’ he means he was created for work in the mouth, and I still do not know whether he was created for work in the Torah or for work in conversation, when he says, ‘This book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth,’ he means ‘he was created for work in the Torah.’
