In this week's video I spend a few days exploring and photographing the remains of the interesting history of the rural North Wales landscape and talk about the importance of exploration in photography.

As photographer's we rarely give ourselves permission to explore outside of the things we usually photograph or the places we usually visit. Exploring isn't about finding new locations and making our best images, it's about spending time experimenting and learning more about the places that interest us, knowing that familiarity over time will result in better photos.

Nice! Photographing what is recent history, and likely to disappear soon, is a great idea. Stepping 'off the beaten path' is very satisfying, I think. Another great video, Chris - hope you break 10K soon.

You make some good points Chris. I also thoroughly enjoy going to a location and actually experiencing it rather than just capturing it through my viewfinder and discovering it in post. I think there must be plenty of opportunity in a derelict old railway and maybe even more so later in the year, when the foliage changes into autumnal colours or disappears.

Great video again Chris, love the way you talk us through each photograph with your settings aswell. Ive just started my own project with not buildings but old phone red boxes in remote places in Cornwall, there are not that many left.

Excellent video and photos Chris. Nothing beats the feeling of discovery with a camera. I’m currently on holiday up In Drumnadroichit in Scotland, and I’ve found some fantastic abandoned farmhouses and such that have been amazing to capture. Sadly I won’t probably get back to them any time again soon, so just grabbing what I can, being very reactionary to the scene and location are how I work. It’s also worth noting that if you do explore abandoned places like I do, then no photo is worth risk of injury. Case in point, found an amazing building in Cannich today, lots of stuff still inside, real history on show, but the risk was not worth the reward as the building was on the verge of collapse. You win some, you lose some. Still, I managed some nice landscape shots incorporating the building.

Wonderful video as always Chris and love seeing the old chapels and funny enough another photographer who you may know Kyle McDougall this week also put out a video where he was shooting the old chapels of Wales. I too have a fascination with old machinery and the way nature takes over. There is an old olive oil factory in my village which is now a ruin but still has all the old stone presses etc inside. Hope you reach your 10K soon as you fully deserve them.

The railway location would be a must for me and I would certainly visit the chapel too. Years ago I photographed the old Clog and Knocker railway in my home town. Now living hundreds of miles to the north I’ve started to photograph abandoned railway on Teesside the first being the Seal Sands branch line. A second visit is definitely required to build on what I’ve already photographed.

I just happen to be into trains so a nice crossover for me in this video, there is actually a resource called railmaponline which documents a vast amount of rail lines in the UK including a lot of long closed ones and it's not just mainline it's also narrow gauge like you visited in this video and I believe trams too. While you might not see any trains themselves, finding old infrastructure and earthworks can be fascinating and interesting like what you found in this video. Hope it might help.

My photography plans/projects are a bit on hold at the moment, as I'm waiting for the weather to cool down a bit. I'm still planning on doing some photography on a beach with some WWII remnants, and a cemetery in Stavanger though. I just wanted to wat a bit with the beach, so there's fewer people about, rather than it being crowded by families enjoying the last bit of summer.

Sometimes it's nice just taking a break/step back, and wait for the right opportunity.

One thing I would like to ask, and it's something that's really bugging me while watching your videos. Why do you use a tripod so extensively? All of these photos could've been shot handled with absolutely zero issues. Setting up a tripod and packing it back takes so much time, plus it's extra weight in your backpack while it all seems meaningless. Just curious as I've never owned a tripod.
