ISP here.  We don't mind customers doing this, but also there is no benefit if you do so.  We provision all our ONTs as bridges so there is little overhead anyway.  You have the physical LEDs showing stuff that can help in times of suspected trouble.  Plain ONTs generally have better heat management.  Cable management is generally worse if you route the fiber all the way to your router.  But it looks better I guess.  We stock them and I can easily ask our techs to give me an sfp for my home setup.  But I keep my simple cheap plastic ONT bridge - not worth the hassle imho

I got a BT advert on this video, oh the irony.

There are some small ONTs, I have a tiny Openreach ADTRAN as well, i guess its just down to cost the whats already been manufactured. I need to swap out my switch for the Mikrotiks I have and a 10GB switch!

Just time 😂

They are amazing SFPs so definitely worth looking at❤

Adran, AVDA - the circle is closing

Could you compare the power consumption of the sfp+ ONT to the adran ONT? I suppose the difference is not that much, since you mentioned, the tranceiver is getting quite hot.

what is the OEM model number? These seem to be more expensive on aliexpress than in the UK?

Do Trooli and the BNG you're on support baby jumbos? Should just be a case of pushing the interface up to 1508 MTU.

Is think it depends what the ISP provides.  If it’s a straight ONT there’s less of a need in my opinion unless you really need to lose the extra box it’s probably better to leave the ONT down to the isp/access network provider.

If it’s one of those horrible combo Ont/router things then it’s far more tempting to replace it with one of these especially if it lacks a bridge mode.

I would just keep it.

is that the 8311 firmware on it ?

I don't like my Nokia box and asking why they have to be so big to just provide public IPs and probably little telemetry?? It's from Finnish ISP Valoo and would probably get one, but already have 10Gig dumb switch and eero Max 7 for 8Gig service. Got eero for free from ISP after subbing to highest speed. Hate eero's "can't configure anything" mindset, but Wi-Fi performance is nice (+3 gig even from a phone). Don't even want to look how much decent 10Gb Mikrotik would cost 😅.

just to sayy be carefull openreach will bill if they cant do diognostics and most altnets do

Ewwwww why in the year of our lord 2026 are they STILL using PPPoE? We have EAP and DHCP option 82 now. Really cool little piece of kit though!

Oh no, your ISP still makes you use PPPoE. I feel very sorry for you.
