That was one of the most complex choreographies ever performed on the Eurovision stage. To be honest, I’m tired of seeing violins or men with shrill falsettos win. This was pure joy presented in an exceptionally delightful way. Bravo to Dara—an outstanding performance!
I am from Bulgaria, and here Dara is a big star, not because only for what she is doing but how she does it. She is passionate, energetic and pure. She is very disciplined and faithful. She can sing, she can dance, she has a charisma, so according to me that is the main power of her. She is fascinating and people just love her everywhere she goes. That is the real reason to win. I also like many other songs, but this is not just about a song, it's about a complete performance both on stage and off.
Here's the thing. I don't think it was the best song, but it was by faaaaar the best performance. Dara was absolutely the most animated performer of the whole season. She was also the most involved in, arguably, one of the hardest choreographies this year.
The difference between her and the stiffness of the other performers was night and day.
I feel like the reason this song is so popular (aside from the dance vibes) is BECAUSE it challenges the typical song structure. From the lack of distinct verses, to rap, to ethnic sounds, to the dance track, to "bangaranga" over and over, to tempo shift, what seems like a "mess" is new and a breath of fresh air for a lot of people. The breakdown of this performance is incredible
The tempo changes aren't a mess, the song isn't a mess. It's a very clever production based a lot on the Kpop model - so yeah I think the Balkan beat switch is GENIUS.
Y'all are wild. Dara has been to MULTIPLE kpop songwriting camps and is painfully familiar with what gets into people's ears (e.g Gnarly which is an absolute brainrot song was a massive hit); not to mention structure and tempo changes have been a part of pop music for the last 5 years and has been a successful formula. It's uncomfortable at first, but 3 listens in when you're used to the beat change, you're HYPED for it, expecting it.
That, and the performance is stupidly good. People want energy, they want to be convinced the singer is having fun. It really is NOT a surprise Bulgaria won lol
A Bulgarian here, I think that even most of us could not predict that we are going to win eurovison this year. I knew we will do well in televoting I was thinking something more than 200 points. There is a diaspora of Bulgarians in many European countries, and the song has a really catchy "balkan" (for a lack of a better word) beat, which I think Balkan televoters would probably choose as their top 5 pick from this year. What shocked me the most was the jury, countries that have a completely different music taste and concepts for what makes a song memorable, gave a great score to Bulgaria (Australia, Denmark, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Belgium) gave 12 points and I must agree it is the staging. I can definitely see DARA having a really cohesive vision for the whole thing and being a major part in the development of all parts of the song, lyrics, choreography, staging, and camera movement. Why do I think that is the case? DARA was severely criticised for her win in the national selection and the Bulgarian broadcaster was even more criticised for their confusing explanation of the results making it seem like the whole voting was rigged (she won the selection fair and square she is consistently one of the most famous POP "in the western sense" in Bulgaria ever since she started in 2016 ). People also did not like the song that much, too chaotic, no singing in Bulgarian, does not implement enough traditional Bulgarian elements. The song was really divisive; most people either loved it or hated it. But what it is 100% is that this song is 100% DARA as a performer; she is known for her sometimes overexaggerated acting on stage, her sassy, magnetic personality, and the experimentation in her music (in general western style pop is not that profitable in Bulgaria so she was retained a super strong vission for all of her projects, since she NEEDS to create the demand for people to listen to her, if it is not interesting enough there is not enough local market demand for these songs to be profitable). This song could not have existed without DARA in any capacity, I am not undermining the team behind her in any way super talented people but the song as a product is definetely something I can only see DARA (from any other bulgarian singer) pull off. I thhink it won because it looks more like a music video than a typical Eurovision performance with the pyrotechnics and high notes.
Agree on the composition. Weird changes and tempo changes, but......she sings immaculately and her presence is out of this world. She is an ARTIST and that was rewarded.
Yes, the Choreographer is a Swedish Genius, He often works with different countries, I've actually had him as teacher myself 20 years ago. Benke Rydman, you can see him, the blond guy kissing the Winner in the Greenroom when the results is declared
