Pro-tip: Even when a Swede switches to English, he will still continue to understand Swedish!

Another difference in Swedish compared to English is that we join words together. "Elbilsladdningssladd" is four words grouped together; el (electric) bil (car) laddnings (charging) sladd (cable). We do this for all words that describe one thing.

If you miss it it can change the meaning of the words. Ex. "En långhårig sjuksköterska" means a long haired nurse. But "En lång hårig sjuk sköterska" means a tall hairy sick nurse!

I am a swede and I keep encountering a Swedish word i’ve never heard before in my life every now and then. So don’t stress new or unheard words too much.😊

When people ask about dialects in Sweden, I always think of my brother, Joakim. He grew up in Stockholm, but our parents are from Skåne, specifically Helsingborg.

When Joakim was about four years old, he and our mom were visiting her parents in Helsingborg. One day, our grandmother asked him if he wanted to go outside and play with the other children. He did—but after a short while, he came back inside.

Grandma asked if he wasn’t having fun, and Joakim replied, “No, because I don’t speak English.”

Of course, it wasn’t English at all—it was the Skåne dialect. But at that age, Joakim had learned from TV that if you didn’t understand what people were saying, it must be English.

The funny part? Today, he lives in Skåne.

About the 80% rule for "en" or "ett", I would suggest looking at it this way: If you know that the plural form of a word changes, ie. "en bil -> flera bilAR, en apelsin -> flera apelsinER" the word USUALLY takes "en". If the plural form stays the same ie. "ett bord -> flera bord, ett hus -> flera hus" it's probably "ett".

As a Swede, when talking to "new" Swedish speakers, not only do the "bad" vowels (wrong sound and length) trip me up, but some people totally skip the tonality and melody of the language and that makes things really hard to understand, and tiresome to listen to. So a hint if you're learning Swedish, get the melody of the language down from the beginning, even if you think it sounds really silly in the beginning.

12:10 And the Swedish language is so dependent on getting the ”melody ” correct, otherwise we truly don’t understand. And this emphasis also changes depending on the sentence structure (it’s called the Swedish pitch accent) which makes it really difficult to pronounce and communicate. I think most Swedes thinks they are being polite when they switch to English, forgetting that new Swedish speakers needs practice. But just tell them you need to practice and they will more prone to stick with Swedish. ❤❤❤🇸🇪

I think that one of the hardest thing about learning Swedish is that we are crap at small talk. We very seldom interact with strangers more than perhaps a small nod and an occasional "Hej", we tend to keep our distance. However there is a way around, if you ask a Swede for information you will generally be able to small talk with a Swede without them realizing that they are engaging in small talk, but you have to keep the small talk going.🙂 We love to feel that we are helping other people, but engaging in small talk just for the small talk....not so much.

Native speaker of swedish here to tell you to not feel bad if people switch to english when talking to you. I am from northen sweden and have a naturally low voice, when I was in southern sweden sometimes they tried to switch to english for me too 😄

Swedish intonation (the words that we stress) can be tricky to understand and completely change the meaning of a sentence:
This phrase is harmless enough:
- "Jag stötte på en kollega idag" (emphasis on 'på') = "I ran into a colleague today" (you just happened to meet him/her)

However, when stressed like this:
- "Jag stötte på en kollega idag" (emphasis on 'stötte') = "I made a pass at/came onto a colleague today"

Don't use the latter intonation when saying this to your significant other...unless you want trouble. 🙂

My aunt did the complete opposite of you mishap with ”ID”: she was in a bar in london with my cousin and the keep wanted my cousin to show some ID and my aunt said ”I think he wants you to show some leg”

The banan (banana) / banan (track) example is not about tones but about putting the stress on different syllables. Most European languages have this. What's unique about Swedish (and Norwegian) is tones. For example anden (the duck) / anden (the spirit), or stegen (the ladder) / stegen (the steps) where the stress in both cases is on the first syllable, but pronounced with different tones.

As a native Swede I sometimes struggle with the dialect in Skåne, e.g. the heavy use of diphthongs or words don´t used elsewhere . I did pick up that you pronounce some vowels more like they do in Skåne. Anyway, you should be proud of yourself for settling in Skåne and learning Swedish the hardest way there is. :)

16:53 Yes, ”legg” or ”i d” are often used as nick names for identification card or legitimation! I think that’s very common in Swedish that things are called one thing but we say another. The comedian Johan Glans talks about the difference of skånska and stockholmska when talking about Coca Cola, in Skåne they say ”en Coca” and in Stockholm we say ”en Cola”. So as you say it differs within different dialects! 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️🇸🇪

12:00 - Some people seem to have a hard time understandning the concept of "smoothing". Quite early on in life your brain starts to generalize and smooth out the difference between sounds - jokes about monolingual Japanese speakers trying to pronounce L and R often shift the phonemes around, while the Japanese speaker is actually pronouncing a sound in between L and R (which the joker doesn't hear as a different phoneme) since they don't hear the difference - and we stop noticing subtle differences in sounds that are similar, but different, to what we are accustomed to.
