I learned a little Japanese at university, and the first time I came to Japan, my first conversation with a Japanese person was at the train station ticket counter to buy a train ticket. I couldn't believe that the employee understood what I was asking right away. It was incredible. 🤣🤣🤣

I took the extrovert method to learn Japanese.
For the first couple months in Japan, I read two textbooks cover to cover (Japanese from Zero 1&2) then I just went out to bars every night (didn't always drink alcohol) and applied what I learned and just talked to people every night. With that method I was able to become proficient enough in Japanese to escape English teaching in around a year.

I'm from New York City born and raised and living in Suginami City Tokyo for over two months now I'm an N2 Level Japanese Speaker after taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in December 2025. I plan to retake the test before I leave in July hopefully to score as N1 proficiency. I Ideally would like to get Permanent Residency (PR) so I can come and go without worrying about a Visa renewal but I know there is a possibility of that becoming more difficult with the politics / conflict of foreigners (Gaijin).

How I learned Japanese is first studying Hiragana and Katakana then Kanji which was the hardest. The method in memorizing the strokes is really what mystified me at first then the rest became word association and then pronunciation, cadence and culture accustoms that are much less confrontational than in New York City. It is NOT EASY and you have to really dedicate time and effort into studying.

I started learning Japanese in 2020 for basic conversations then in 2022 it took roughly 3-5  years for me to get to N2 fluency in 2025 and comfortably understand native Japanese conversation. It is possible to absorb information quicker but I took my time to really digest the language and culture. Befriending Japanese people has been very helpful too.

I started studying Japanese hoping to be conversational this year but idk XD This gives me hope if I keep going I will make it one day! My desire isn't to be perfect, just to be able to make friends.
