what’s your favorite miles album? comment below!

You've come a long way from being afraid of A Love Supreme

Abby talking about Miles Davis is an experience. It shows that she beat Zappa and Beefheart

this was the jazz album that got me into fusion. it's also my second favorite jazz album of all time. utterly timeless and pioneering music

Miles Davis is one of the all time greats. He will be forever remembered as one of the best jazz musicians of all time and his name will be spoken in the same breath as Mozart

We’re getting closer to Get Up With It

In a Silent Way might just be my favourite Miles Davis record. Brilliant blend of rock and jazz.

JAZZ MONDAY IS BACK

Your disclaimer is right on. As a musician, I approve whole heatedly. You have good ears.

Now I have to watch lost highway

I am a senior listener who appreciated the privilege of hearing all this burgeoning rock music & fusion jazz in real time, as it came out brand new. Credit again to my late & trailblazing older brother, who REALLY caught the wave & exposed me to all the pioneering music of the times, including Miles Davis (and many others).
I have to say, despite HEAVY exposure to Miles & his pioneering records of the late 60's/ early '70's, I never really "got it". I admired it more than I liked it. Paradoxically, I was connecting magnetically at the same time with the equally universe-expanding work of the emerging prog bands, led early by Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP of course. Why did I like the prog bands and not the equally adventurous jazz fusion trailblazers? Probably because progrock still extended into the conventions of pop songs which I was already fully conversant in. I can admire the conceptual sonic collages of these peak Miles records, but I admit that I still "don't get it". I see it as the musical equivalent of Jackson Pollock paintings... NOT for everyone.
I do still infrequently force-feed myself some "Bitches Brew" or Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I gotta say I just can't feel it. I especially appreciate how "Bitches Brew" was released in quadraphonic, which significantly upgraded the cool cachet of the LP & its vaulting ambitions.
The 60's and '70's were just an INCREDIBLY fruitful era for music, art & culture and I was GRATEFUL even as an early teen to recognize that we were living through an especially vibrant time. I'm still AMAZED that there are still MANY bands & GREAT music I just plain overlooked back then just because I was trying to "drink from the firehose" of popular culture. THANKS yet again for your RESPECT for the era, AND the stellar research & care you put into every episode.

MILES!

It would interesting to bookend Miles' Bitches Brew with Soft Machine's Third as they were released around the same time, are both double albums that are filled with tracks that take up entire sides, but represent artists moving towards one another, one from a rock side moving toward jazz and the other from the jazz side moving toward rock.

In Cornelius Fudge voice “She’s back!”

"The sound above," interesting.  I think that I think of that in terms of "transcendance"

"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny." --FZ.

I was lucky to find a sealed copy of The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions in the used/cut-out aisle at Music Millennium in Portland for less than a new copy of the original…

Tony Williams was one of the greatest drummers ever to pick up a pair of sticks. Strangely subdued on In a Silent Way, he went on to other things.

I only read this once, long ago.  It told  of Davis stopped  in a cab observing a crowd going to see Hendrix.  when told the crowd was for a rock act, a form he considered inferior,  he decided he wasn't getting enough recognition and prosperity as a jazz musician and decided to change things up right then.

If you want more mind-blowing associations, "It's About That Time" features a lot in the William Greaves film Symbiopsychotaxiplasm.

Nobody can be told what it is ... you have to see it for yourself =D
