I live in an Asian city far, far away from Joe & Nic’s road trip destinations, but I am honestly so fascinated with these places.   The content of this channel enables us all to travel to American small towns. Thank you Joe & Nic.

Joe you are a national treasure. Thank you for documenting these towns. Historians will thank you some day.

Appalachia is a fascinating world. Moved back there to retire. Not born in the mountains but my soul feels best there.

I looked it up, Jonesville, Virginia is known for its lights in the park Christmas lights festival

All that greenery lessens the depth of poverty.  At least they don’t have to see some grimy, gritty post industrial areas.

The Appalachian coal towns have such a unique atmosphere.
Behind every abandoned building there are stories of families, hard work, and entire communities that once kept these valleys alive.

A lot people in these areas are members of the US ARMY Reserves and US ARMY NATIONAL GUARDS. This is a great help in supplemental income.

I just wanted to add that a level 5 prison is considered super max prison. Level 5 is as high as it goes when it comes to prisons. I imagine the town  changed it from super max to level 5 (same thing) to sound less scary and extreme lol.

Some of these towns must be hanging on like a thread. So many empty deserted homes but so many homeless elsewhere.

Pennington Gap was the hometown of the Carter Family, considered the first family of country music.

Its so so fascinating to see these hidden, isolated parts of America

I often think of what an opportunity there is for young people that have been told they can never own their own home. Maybe not as many things to do but with so many working from home I would start out there

You missed mentioning the awesome historic, three-story structure in Appalachia, VA, notable for having street-level access on all four floors, a design that once earned it a place in the Guinness World Records. And I will also mention the fact their football team was one of our best rivals in high school! The Bulldogs. Thx for sharing.

“How does someone have those incomes and have houses like this?”

It’s easy. I’m from Virginia (DC area) but spend time in Charleston WV and asked myself the same question. But the answer is simple. Many of the houses are passed down/inherited by family. Many are the original owners. And even if they purchased it, a 30 year mortgage on a $100k house is manageable. Also, section 8 and other assistance is high in these kind of places.

And I also have to say, as someone whose media consumption is probably 50% American (movies, music, etc.), it’s really nice to see these real small towns that you normally don’t see in American movies or on the news. It feels so much more real, and I have to say that many of these small towns are very beautiful!

Appalachia actually looks a lot like northern Sweden during the summer and fall.

What I like about this series, you treat each town with respect, simply reporting... These are people's homes and you don't get in any digs as some do.

I'm in Malaysia and I love to watch YouTube videos of visits to the smaller towns throughout the US (and Canada too). With this one, despite many buildings in town being abandoned, the town looks very well-kept. It shows that despite the economic situation there having deteriorated from years ago, the people and local government still have a lot of pride in their town.

Joe & Nic, that's a really sad state of affairs. However, I'm a pensioner living in the UK and I'd like to inform you that a huge percentage of the population here are living on a lot less than your Appalachian mean of $22K. In your last video (or the one before) I was astonished to observe how much you spent for the two of you on your luncheon- more than my monthly grocery bill!!- yes really. Poverty is a problem in all places and across many peoples for a huge variety of reasons; I spent a part of my life working to try to change things but in hindsight, I don't feel I made much difference. I love the delivery you have in your vids; thank you; please keep on doing them. Regards
