oh the irony of druski parroting these talking points when he’s literally built his brand of making fun of white ppl who parrot the same talking points too as well with pull yourself up by your bootstraps!!
I hate his argument so bad, like being able to be obsessed with something isn't privileged, isn't ruinous, doesn't cost more than you'll ever get back sometimes. It doesn't matter how obsessed and dedicated you are to something if it's not actively paying your bills or taking care of your family, or if you lack the access to certain spaces so that you don't get absorbed in the sea of content noise. Luck benefits those that are prepared, but the cost of preparation is often more than what most people can afford
I have been preaching to my friends lately how important it is that we embrace our hobbies and just doing what you enjoy not tryna turn it into content or some 6 figure business
The “pull yourself up by your boot straps” argument assumes that there is a direct correlation between hard work and wealth when it’s been proven time & time again that that is not true.
And what makes it even MORE frustrating is that the ppl espousing that rhetoric know that what they’ve accomplished is nearly impossible. They KNOW they got lucky in addition to working hard yet they make it seem like luck and connections had nothing to do with it
It’s a psychological issue where it clear HE couldn’t have gotten to where he’s at if not for the hustle grind stuff but it’s a problem when you make your personal experience a sociological fact about why people end up where they do. They found this same thing in games of Monopoly where people are given an advantage at the beginning of the game are actually more likely to attribute their later success to their skill rather than benefits they were given to start. It’s a tension a lot of people don’t want to contend with at all
This went deeper than I expected, appreciated the insights on this. As a black guy in his 20’s I take a lot from these kind of discussions on topics you don’t really hear about
Every successful person who didn't merely inherit their success is profoundly lucky and to pretend otherwise is arrogance. Even the inheritor is lucky but that's a different type of luck.
I believe that the biggest factors of success are timing and luck. A lot of talented and knowledgeable people do not achieve the level of success most would expect them to.
