One piece of advice to any American thinking of moving to the UK is don't assume London represents the whole of the UK . Our homes are smaller for another thing too

It's not the difference between the electrical sockets being the problem, the plugs can be changed, it's the difference in the voltage that is the problem.

240 volts not 110.

Another tip to your fellow Americans thinking of making the move, don't just think that only London exists in 🇬🇧 and there are other nicer places to live and renting & buying a home might cost less. 😉😁👍💯✌️❤️

First thing to do when considering a move to any country is take a couple of long holidays there (at least three weeks). One in the winter and the next in the summer. That way you get a clear idea of the climate as well as the people and infrastructure.

I moved from a massive house to a 1 bed council flat upon my divorce. The one thing I couldn't go back to was a small bed. So even though my Super Dooper Superking mattress takes up LITERALLY 60% of the floor space of my single bedroom, it's staying!

All good advice. One thing that is true is that stuff expanses to fill the space available for it. 😁🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

the power difference means that electrical stuff is a nuisance if you move it. I've heard several people recommending holding yard sales before leaving because your better off carrying the cash than carrying the furniture or electrical goods. Even clothes can be an issue when you are moving to a very different climate.

I'm English, with 10 years living and working in the US. You have those points right, with a couple of modification. The hair dryer may be dual voltage - getting more likely as manufacturers make the same thing for US and rest-of-world. But if it is for 120v, bring it. Make sure there is a proper fire extinguisher (required in hotels and rental properties) and plug it in. The subsequent fireworks can be  amusing, or just a dissapointing 'Phut' . Secondly, a short-term rental is very sensible.. You'll need to settle in. There are contracts, but if you do not rent from a mega-corp, you can just ignore that and do a runner to your new neighbourhood.
Thirdly, possibly most importantly, the contact groups are in pubs. There you find where you will fit in, because there are many of your possible neighbours.

1. Do not consider a PO Box at over 50 quid a week! Ask people to address your mail 'care of,' (C/O) to a trusted person.
2. Some electronic kit runs on an external dc power converter plug. You can often find a cheap UK version, 230v ac in, 12v dc out. I have a Region A blu-ray player bought on well-known river website, forty for the player and 8 for the adapter.
3. You can, with an adapter plug, connect a euro 230v thing into a N.American 115v supply. This is safe but possibly aneamic in output. DO NOT DO THIS THE OTHER WAY ROUND, BANG!!!

Regarding rentals, in fairness, tenants now essentially have short term flexibility even in supposed "long term" rentals because of the recent change to law. Tenants can basically give notice whenever and are only tied in for two months at most. It's landlords who are stuck with effectively a 16 month minimum commitment

the UK is 40 times smaller than the US but only 4 times less population,  so yes there is a lot less space

Not all electrical appliances need to be left behind. Many appliances work on both systems, just look at the label.
It may say both 110V and 240V. You may need to put a different plug on it if you intend to have it in the UK permanently. Or have a travel adapter as well.

Bear in mind major differences between different parts of the UK - Scotland, for example, has its own legal system seperate from everyone else and, for another, London is pretty much its own entity rather than representing the UK as a whole. (Also, please don't try to drive here until you have at least a passing acquaintance with the Highway Code - by our standards, US licences seem to be something you can get by sending off enough box tops rather than being rigorously earned. We do have trains that connect cities and you're much less at risk of doing serious damage by using those instead.)

Hobbies are always a good thing, and there are plenty of ways to continue almost any hobby over here. Hell, you can even go to a gun range here if that's your thing. There is a lot of community here, and everyone is new at some point. So as a Brit, I'd definitely recommend hobbies, it will give you friends who aren't just Americans who moved here bonding over confusion and homesickness.

I think most of us won't care that you're American, we might be interested, but the thing we'd be focused on is sharing the hobby. It's not like you're French (that's a joke, we'll even welcome them)... I know some of the Americans on YouTube who have moved here have found it difficult to find British friends, which sucks, but I promise a lot of us will be more interested in sharing our hobbies.

28:55 that was a Bristolian Accent ..🇬🇧..Yes the birthplace of Cary Grant and David Prowse .-Darth Vader-  😂

I'd add that bringing ALL of your clothes is going to be unnecessary.  With the walking culture as well as less sugar content in food, you're going to lose weight. (Take a look at RedBusRuss, to see his downsizing)

Do you know this vid is one of your best for advice.  I have followed you for age . As a 62 Yr old British bloke I think the social club think is a great idea for lonely older people too. You clearly help a lot of people Kaylyn . (Sorry if I spelt that wrong).

Actually anything with an electric motor has a different Hz rating, so will not last long.  They will burn out fast.  The cost of shipping stuff is very high ( ask me how I know) so just sell everything except clothes etc, and buy new.
