I had this surgery in November and this is the best explanation I’ve ever seen.  My surgeon also mentioned that I’ll be back to normal within a few months.  I continue to have issues with constipation and I keep thinking this is normal. I take fiber daily, drink lots of water and walk 12,000 steps a day.  After watching your video it sounds like this is not normal so I will be contacting my surgeon to follow up.  Thank you for all your video and I love the humorous touch!

My husband had the surgery 3 days ago and was up walking around the next day and discharged yesterday.  As you said, the pain is manageable with Ibuprofen and Tylenol.  We both watched the video a couple of weeks ago and felt more comfortable about the procedure.  Thank you. so much for putting this video on YouTube.

Just had exactly this suregery 3 days ago, could walk a few hours later and went out from hospital the day after, a bit painy because of the gas traces, muscle traumas, and skin stitches, but not that bad regarding the complexity of such surgery. Thirty days after my colon resection surgery, an infection developed. My doctor stated that they saw nothing unusual in the anastomotic area while the ileostomy was being created, suggested a rheumatological condition, mentioned that clots sometimes affect the blood supply to the tissues at the anastomosis line, and recommended an ileostomy. Afterward, the ileostomy did not function properly for 7–8 days, and we were discharged on the 9th day. On the 4th day after coming home, stool passage into the large intestine occurred, and infection markers rose again. We have been in the hospital for 10 days; the doctor prescribed a stool-thickening agent, and it has been used for these 10 days. The infection has dropped, but today the pain in the left pelvic and testicular region returned—sometimes very severe, sometimes mild. They gave me painkillers, and I am afraid that this will not heal. To add to the timeline, it has now been 57 days since my colon resection surgery and 23 days since the ileostomy was created.

I'm so glad I watched this video. In 2 weeks, I am going in for a Colonoscopy to find out how much colon is affected. Then I will be having a Lap Colectomy 2 weeks after that. My biggest fear is having to get a Colostomy bag. I also feared having the huge incision. I've have my gallbladder removed years ago and have the 4 little incisions. I'm relieved that this surgery will be pretty much the same thing.

I am scheduled soon. Nervous of course but I know they do not release you from hospital until they are satisfied your tummy is working properly.
I have diverticulitis but it has caused a significant thickening in the sigmoid colon. Hopefully no cancer which colonoscopy and CT colonoscopy could not get clear images because of blockage. I still pass stool well by using Lacson twice a day otherwise constipation.
Surgeon feels I might need a stoma due to the rectum so near to thickening 😢
You make the pain sound like almost insignificant this is my biggest scare. 75 years and still a boob 😢 some say pain for a long time. I am in Gauteng South Africa. Excellent surgeon and I know here.

I am a seventy year-old male and I have had this JP drain on me for about three weeks now. They checked out my 'current status' with this last week, and told me that the bulb stays on....and now, I am scheduled to speak with a surgeon about this topic this week (on Thrs., 07/30/26). Thank you for this video! I am meeting with my surgeon in a week to discuss moving forward with elective surgery. I have had 5 or 6 medically documented diverticulitis flare ups, with the first putting me in the hospital for 5 days. That was 9 years ago. I did not have another flare-up until 2020 and have had 4 since then. None required hospitalization, but I experienced all the usual symptoms and stayed feeling sick (some surely due to the Cipro and Flagyl) for usually a week or two before starting to feel better. I'm so nervous about the surgery, but your video helped ease my mind. Hopefully, my surgeon will put me even more at ease when I see her in a week (Dr. Karen Sherman in Raleigh, NC). I guess my biggest concern has always been that I am about 80 pounds overweight and not knowing how that would impact her doing it laparoscopic/robotic. I'm 63 with no other health issues other than moderate blood pressure that is controlled with meds. I don't feel I have any options as I seem like I will probably continue to have recurrences, and I'd rather take care of it now, than later, or worse, under emergency. Thank you again for this informative and "not scary" video.

Wow this is awesome. The surgeon i saw was so disgusted from the looks on his face because i didnt choose surgery after my 1st flare so that made me more scared to even do this. U seem like a caring dr ❤❤❤

Wow amazing thanks! I’m having this done in a couple months. Diverticulosis created terrible stricture = constipation. I just couldn’t figure out how the two ends went back together! Now I know! lol love it. I’m so glad I found your page!

Unhappily, this is the surgery that is in my near future.  I do appreciate your video.  Currently working on clearing an abscess, so my surgeon and I haven't gone into too many surgical details yet.  I do know the plan is to get me well enough to do it laparoscopically, and I am grateful I wasn't so sick that it had to be done as an emergency with a large incision.  (I'll see my surgeon in a couple of days;  I'll be sure to ask him about the two donuts.)
