SHANG-CHI FIRST TIME REACTION || My Friend Watches the MCU

Holden & Jen Hardman

Today, my friend enters the world of Ta Lo! He missed out on a lot of Phase 4 Marvel, so I decided it was time to watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the first time.

We joke throughout, discuss the choreography, the family dynamics, and how this film sets up the future of the Avengers. Is this movie underrated? Overrated? We get into all of it in our post-movie discussion.

Clarifications:

The father took off his rings so he could live a normal life, and age with his family. He was prepared to give up his past pursuits for his family. When he was gone and the wife was attacked, he was just running errands, chores, whatever, but the point of him not escaping his life is that his actions against others is what brought them to try and attack him, but ended up being his family. The line of him choosing the rings over his family had to do with his kids being in mourning and needing their father for support but he instead dove into vengeance and took up his old mantle and began to hunt down the men who killed his wife.

At one point Matt mentions, why does he look older here? Because he is. When the rings were off, he aged normally, so from the beginning of the movie, when he first looks for tao lo, he indeed was younger. Just a couple of bits I don't think were caught.

The mom lost her powers because she left the village what she chose to marry him. The father was not using the rings anymore after marrying her. He was most likely away on business, not ring related. That’s why he said that it’s his fault because he stopped wearing the rings and that’s why she died because his enemies didn’t fear him. The rings took them away after his wife died because he was so focused on revenge and gaining power that all he cared about was training his son and ignoring his daughter.

Can't wait for Matt to see Thunderbolts, I think he'll like the mental health themes

I had no idea Matt's book was so integral to the plot. Fascinating.

The movie has a lot of issues, but things like the portal you really weren't paying attention, Helicopters can't pass it, and the forest send vehicles flying. His mother don't have the powers because they only have in that village, she said several times she left the powers behind. The same way that in the ending, Shang Chi will only have the powers of the rings, and not have those airbenders abilities that came from the dragon.

"the water bottle girl" and "I wrote a book" bit was worth the like by themselves. You guys are great.

Show Matt the Sonic movies and when Sonic and Shadow go Super Saiyan, say, "Matt, this is a small taste of what DBZ would be in live action" lol. I think this movie is fun. I really want a sequel and I know people don't like the Iron Fist series, but I would love to see a sequel with Shang-chi and Iron First teaming up.

22:04 the father said that the map only opens once a year at a certain time of day. They have the guy that played the Mandarin in the car with him because he’s the only one that can understand Boris and Boris is from the village that they’re trying to get to so he is able to understand the forest to make it through safely.

43:12 the only defense I would offer for homegirl getting that shot on the baddie is that, unlike all the other warriors on the battlefield, she isn't focused on defending the village or even herself. She is focused on her friend, so she's seeing that happen when others aren't. In that way, despite all the other warriors, it basically had to be her.
