Demi said she was considering retirement when she got this script. Then girl won her first golden globe with it.

I believe the fact that they left the other body on the floor with no care, is a representation of how she treats herself. "You are one", you know? I cried in a lot of parts in this movie - as someone who struggled with self hate and that I still am guilty of treating myself badly sometimes, this movie just felt incredibly sad. Elizabeth was used until there was nothing left, literally - personally, I loved the ending. To me it felt like a you know what? Hell yeah. Living like this is violent, this industry is violent, being a woman is a bloodbath, and it is cruel and visceral. Not all movies need to be subtle, you know?

Watching this as a 56 year old woman who has become invisible to men, this was a trip. Would I want to be my younger self? Not really. I like my peaceful life now, with no pressure to look a certain way anymore. I no longer fear ageing because I am already there, and it’s not half as bad as I thought it would be. Good things happen when you accept yourself, and you realise that the only person whose opinion of you matters is your own opinion ❤

The monster getting ready for the evening and lovingly admiring herself while doing her hair and adorning her jewels made me happy cry 🥹 it’s so cute in spite of the horror how she finds self love for just a moment no matter what the world might think

super bummed demi missed out on the oscar for this, but glad the film got recognized!

I am SO glad someone finally caught the addiction themes and understood they are still one consciousness. It's like an addiction. A substance addiction.. She goes to a sketchy place once a week to get her fix. It's like how addicts see themselves as two different people, the high self and the sober self. In a more mild example, we can probably all relate to saying 'ugh drunk me is such an idiot. I can't believe what drunk me did last night'. When she's Sue she's addicted to the feeling of being young, attractive, loved and seen by everyone. She disregards her health and her body. Then when she's Elisabeth (sober) she regrets everything she did and feels like shit, but she just can't stop using and becoming Sue, even when it's rotting her from the inside

Honest to God, I cried during that Mirror scene when she keeps coming back. It really hits hard, can relate...

it makes me tear up realizing elisabeth had a chance to get with a guy who truly loved her and hated herself so much and put so much pressure on herself she couldnt go see him. actually heartbreaking

No doubt that they share consciousness -- Sue knows about the "New Elizabeth Sparkle" audition that Elizabeth read about, for instance -- but not every reactor gets it. Notice that Monstro Elisasue tries to become ELIZABETH again with that mask, not Sue. And I find it interesting that Fred is the person in her hallucinations that has the last word: "You're irreplaceable!" That said, this movie is the best Public Service Announcement ever about FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS. It would be 15 minutes long and have a happy ending if the directions had been followed. It's 2 hours and 20 minutes of "Lovecraftian hellscape."
It won one Oscar -- makeup/effects. So Demi was snubbed, and Margaret ignored, but Monstro Elisasue brought home the gold! You go, girl!

I love the homage to classic horror! The thing, the fly, the shining, and so much more!

Coralie is the future of filmmaking. What an incredible piece of art! Film of the decade for me!

the fact that demi didnt win best actress at the oscars this year for this makes me wanna fight god

It's awesome seeing you both appreciate The Substance, it's such a striking blind-watch. One of my favorite details is how the Jack Quaid character is depicted as very gross and unkempt, which highlights the irony that he's the one who fires Elizabeth for not appearing young and flawless

hair and makeup for this movie won an Oscar 🙂

Carolie took inspiration from the fly, the shining, videodrome, lost highway, and many more classics. Very Lynch and Cronenberg

I have watched this movie multiple times now, and through different reactors, which is so much fun to see. No one has mentioned the homage to both the Elephant Man and Carrie at the end. So many references to other films throughout but a masterpiece on its own!
