On March 18th, 1925, the states of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana would be feel the wrath of the worst tornado in American History. Now 100 years later, I use engineering methods to determine what made this tornado so impactful.

Special thanks to ElricOfMelniboné for research contributions.

my mom was an in home nurse back in the 1990s here in Terre haute Indiana......she took care of a little old lady that was in the path of it as a kid and survived it after it took out her family farm......every time my mom showed up at her house the woman asked her what the weather was like outside no matter the day.....that woman never got past that fear of weather for the remainder of her life because of the tri state tornado

100 years. I remember watching Target Tornado on the weather channel and being amazed that a storm could kill nearly 700 people.

I can’t believe this happened 100 years ago, it’s probably one of the worst or the worst tornado in U.S history. I can’t imagine what it was like then.

My grandmother was a high school senior in Princeton, Indiana in March 1925. The storm reached Princeton after school had let out, which probably saved dozens of lives. Her high school was on the edge of the tornado, and she was still in it when the storm hit. The building was partly unroofed and she saw the contents swept out, but her part remained standing and she was unhurt. I only recall her mentioning it once, probably because it was such a terrifying experince.

Excellent analysis. It confirms that, despite the majority of destroyed buildings being of poor construction, this tornado was among the most violent ever witnessed.

My great grandfather saw this tornado the day it hit Princeton He was fishing at payola and he saw a black mass moving through when he realized that it was a tornado hitting Princeton

The first time I've ever seen this tornado/tornados actually dissected, and not just a bunch of 100 year old interviews or a severely underestimated drath toll on YouTube.

the scariest thing about this tornado was how rain-wrapped it was, it was described as, iirc,
a "rolling fog"

Couldn't believe that both June First and Weatherbox uploaded a video on this monster

My town (Murphysboro) was hit by the tri-state tornado. It tore through the northern part of the town, but you can see which parts weren’t destroyed. Parts that didn’t get hit still have brick roads and older abandoned buildings. It’s pretty fascinating because some roads are still brick roads but with asphalt layered over them.

I genuinely wish there were photos of this storm.

I saw a photo claiming to be of the Tri-State tornado, only to later find out it was of Wichita Falls (1979), edited to look like a grainy and faded brown photo of the 1920s. I was bitterly disappointed. 💀😭😅

That monster flying into these towns at 70 mph would have not allowed people to take cover. No time to see how destructive it was.

Finally an in-depth review of this historic monster!

Man, how did I never know you were a mechanical engineer? This explains your style of analysis! I’m impressed, too… I can do math well enough to pass classes, but I’m hopeless at applied mathematics. It’s all number puzzles to me. Anyway, I’d always expected for tornado Youtubers to be meteorologists or hobbyists, but it does make sense for someone in engineering to also take an interest in the damage and how to better prevent it.

Can you imagine getting your house destroyed in a tornado, you rebuild it, and then the economy crashes 4 years later? These people have to have had the worst decade of their lives

@Nurichiri 1 year ago

Given that this is the 100th anniversary I'm surprised I haven't seen more videos on it. This is the only one I've seen this March.

100 years, amazing. back when there was no radar, no sirens, no warning. and an F5 too. almost 700 dead from this absolute freak of nature i have no words to describe.

@Whitey8.2 1 year ago

They just put out new historic markers for this Tornado. Gorham, Murphysboro, and Desoto got one. I live about 5 miles off this things track and worry about storms often thanks to it.
