If you've ever been to Alabama, you know that it's a miracle this tornado only struck 5 churches

It’s crazy to think of the monsters that James Spann has been on air for. Saved many lives in his time. Absolute legend for sure

Those situations where a large gathering of people are in a single structure with only one wall separating them from the outside are a worst case scenario for tornadoes. Great video.

“Nobody steps on a church in my town!” -Bill Murray

This week really is stacked with banger YouTuber weather documentaries.

Piedmont native here. Been here all my life(mostly). This happened around my birthday, same as the big snowstorm. And I was pretty small when this happened, I just remembered my dad getting us all into our homes basement, as well as our neighbors. Then after hearing about the church my uncle Scott ran out to Goshen to help them uncover the rubble and help those buried. I know it messed with him a lot. And I remember him talking about pulling a little girl out of the rubble. I'm 37 now, and about 2 years ago I worked with this girl about my age, who seemed to know all about my family. My brother, sisters, aunt uncle, grandparents. All of em. And my grandparents ran a few stores in town so they were well known in the community. So that's honestly what I thought when she told me my family's names. But it turns out she was the little girl my uncle pulled out. And was always so thankful for his help. She's my girl, love her much.

First Celton Henderson, then TornadoTRX, now WeatherBox! Amazing way to celebrate Halloween, another great production.

"The Dixie Jungle..." Great way to describe chasing here in the south. Between the trees, low clouds, high precip...it's just an absolute mess trying to see anything here. Used to spot for Skywarn awhile back and we generally had a rule of thumb where if you found a good vantage point you just stuck with it. Seeing these chasers go into the trees with some of these storms always gets me a bit worried. Zero visibility and a rain wrapped monster down here can just roll up on you without warning.

TRX and weatherbox on the same day, what a blessed day 🌪️

I remember this. I was living only 15 miles from Piedmont. Also, I was in a tornado on December 16th, 2000 in Coates Bend, Alabama (north Gadsden). I was alone in my mobile home while my then husband was with our children, Christmas shopping for me. Long story short, an F3 ripped through our home and I was thrown like a rag doll. We lost everything and I was hurt--broken arm, cut and bruised and eventually had back surgery for my hurt back. We lived in a wonderful community and I can't begin to tell you how incredible everyone was. It'll be 25 years ago this December but I can't begin to remember like it was yesterday. It's truly a miracle i survived.

You mentioned elsewhere in the comments that you've been using a different style because the last couple of videos have been dealing with much more heavy/intense events with more death than usual. I think that covering heavier topics like this in a more narrative style, talking about the human cost and telling the story itself, is actually a very good choice. I don't think you ever trivialize that aspect, even when your typical style is much more focused on the weather itself and explaining to a fairly layperson audience how the different storms work. However, in cases like this, you are even farther removed from doing so and keep yourself and therefore the audience grounded in the reality that this is not just an example event in a weather demo, but a tragedy where people died and property was destroyed.

Being able to change up your style and knowing when to choose the appropriate style is a sign of an excellent creator. At first I was a little thrown off and missed the educational style, but that was the wrong reaction from me. Now I know why you took the creative decision you did and this video (and the other ones of similar style) is much better for it. Just makes me appreciate all over again how truly awesome you are at what you do and keeps me hoping to more awesomeness in the future. Cheers! ^-^

You didn't make an appearance this time 😢. Will always click a weatherBox video!

watching this while the remnants of melissa pass over me, lightning in the background and strong winds is a great halloween treat !

GUYS REMEMBER there is always a calm before a storm

I was a kid during this outbreak. The only tornado I’ve experienced was this. It hit near the NC/SC border and crossed a few houses up the road.

Thank you for making this video. This storm took my home when I was in kindergarten. I lived less than 5 minutes away from Goshen Methodist at the time, and the picture at 12:00 hung on the wall in the school library for years.  I hear a lot of discussion over more recent tornadoes from our area (such as Jacksonville in 2018) but I've never seen anyone actually discuss this one outside of the immediate area. My heart absolutely dropped when I saw the thumbnail, but I'm glad I watched.

Those of us who lived through this refer to it as the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak. I lived in Georgia at the time where a weaker tornado took out a nearby family and destroyed part of our rural county. I didn’t learn about the other Palm Sunday outbreak  from 1965 until a year or so ago.   Thank you for covering this!

I live about 40 minutes away from Goshen and my great grandfather is buried at Union Grove. I was 3.5 that day and it serves as my earliest vivid memory, especially that evening when the second round came through and the tornado hit Lindale a few miles away.

My dad was a fire captain and was on duty that day and I was home alone with my mom, and I remember her carrying me to the basement and when we got there, I looked at the door facing that way, and the window lit up a flickering green, and it scared me bad enough I ran back upstairs. I’ve strum chased now for 20 years around the South, and as much as I’ve seen, I’ve never seen green lightning like that again.

Considering the number of churches this thing went over, I dare say it was a miracle so few actually died.
