13 Wild West Gunfights That Actually Happened Face-to-Face
On the night of February 8, 1887, at exactly eight in the evening, on the wooden sidewalk outside the White Elephant Saloon at 308 Main Street in Fort Worth, Texas, a six-foot-tall former city marshal named Timothy Isaiah Courtright faced a five-foot-six gambler named Luke Short over a disputed twenty-dollar protection payment. Both men were armed. Both men knew the conversation was about to end in gunplay. Both men reached for their pistols at the same instant. Five seconds later, Courtright was dying in the dust with five .45 caliber bullets in his chest, and Short was walking back into the saloon to order a whiskey.
