Yeah this script was very hard to write. Nobody really gives a shit about ultimate chicken horse, they care about the story that can be told through it. I didn’t want to tell a story that was just “she beat this map, and then she beat this even harder map, and then-“ but when it comes to challenge clears, that’s basically what the sequence of events looks like. I also don’t want to just make things up, so I needed to find some way to frame a real sequence of events that tells a good story.
People don’t care about UCH, but they REALLY don’t care about challenge clears, because it’s just somebody in isolation playing on their own. There isn’t enough conflict to tell a good story, so I need to instead make people care about the character. And people care more when there is emotion attached to the narrative. By structuring the video this way the first time you are introduced to Milena, there is emotion to go along with it. You immediately care about what she's doing in a way you otherwise wouldn't, because she is being attached to something else that invokes emotion. And this is Enough to keep people watching for long enough that I can give them a good reason to care about what she’s doing.
I tried SO many ways of structuring and packaging this video, but ultimately the only thing I could really get to work was this. I also just generally think subverting expectations is useful from a storytelling perspective, so a twist like this works well. And this twist requires that the viewer expects the video to be about knightmare, not Milena. At the end of the day I think the best outcome for Milena and the UCH community (and myself of course) is that a video does well and has a broad reach so that I can tell more people her story. Also I'm sure some people will see this and ask something like "Why can't you just structure the video this way, but make the title about Milena", the answer to that just has to do with packaging. If you want a video to do well on youtube you can't afford to think about the title, thumbnail, concept, and content as separate entities. They all work together to create a specific experience, and for this the title felt necessary.
