For some reason I look at the 3 (count 'em - three!) games that kicked Sonic off as a gaming icon! We roll right through the trilogy of Sonic the Hedgehog and talk about the design of each of the games & Knuckles

Greetings and welcome to the bottom of the description. I'm Alax, more legally known as Alex Carducci. I make design analysis videos on fictional stuff I really like. Most of this time this centralizes on video games I love like Super Smash Bros., Super Mario, Persona, or Sonic the Hedgehog. I studied design and communications, so I find it fascinating how technology and culture shapes the media in our lives and how we perceive it. My channel aims to look into the history and development of these topics in depth so we can all find the truth as to why things are made the way they are. Also, there's a talking cat.

"...you get the Super Emeralds ONLY in Mushroom Hill zone."

...Did we play the same game? Because all of the levels from Sonic & Knuckles have Super Emerald Rings

@ToxicAtom 6 years ago

28:35 There are big rings in Flying Battery, Sandopolis, and Lava Reef as well. Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg are the only ones without (Although Death Egg has rooms that look and feel like they were once intended to have big rings in them)

Probably already knew this but Fun Fact:
In the original Sonic 3 (the one that was gonna come w/ the & Knuckles portion) between Carnival Night and Ice Cap was Flying Battery. You'd be launched into the airship through the cannon and then when landing in Ice Cap, you'd be snowboarding off the door you kick off. So the transition made 10% more sense.

"Why would you go and create something that's completely opposite to what you're advertising?"

Sega did a good job with the advertising to sell the idea of Sonic being fast, in an effort to differentiate both their mascot and their hardware from Nintendo, but the game was already under development as this was being figured out. They were very much riffing on Mario, which has similar kinds of stop-and-start obstacles, and didn't have time to fully apply the high concept they settled on until the sequel.

Me: What about Sonic CD?
Alax: What about Sonic CD?
In all seriousness, if I had to rank all the “classic” Sonic games, including the OG trilogy, it’d be like this:
1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
2. Sonic Mania
3. Sonic CD
4. Sonic 2
5. Sonic 1

I once heard a saying from GeoExe: “Humanity is like a ocean. If a few drops of the ocean are dirty, that does not mean that the entire ocean is dirty.” Replace “humanity” with “The Sonic Series” and you get why people should make fun of Sonic less.

I personally will always prefer the adventure games, the advance games, and heroes over the classic games. That just what I grew up with, and while yeah, they have their problems, they offer so much in terms of gameplay and style. The advance games introduced me to my favorite character in the series, Cream and Cheese, and Sonic Heroes brought in my second favorite, being E-123 Omega.

But even though I prefer those games over the classics, I will never deny how much the classic games did so well, and I will always hold a high level of respect for them. Sonic mania is the best thing to come out of sonic this entire decade. I LOVE every inch of mania.

With that said, I really hope sonic team decides to push the series forward in terms of the 3d department, because 3D hasn’t been too great lately. Forced 2D sections, no playable characters besides sonic, shotty level design, the tone has been dumbed down, just moving in a circle feels bad. I’d love for the series to retry the adventure formula and figure out what made them fun, as well as what made us love the characters and world of Sonic. April 20th is only so far away, we’ll find out what the future has in store for us soon enough. Sonic the hedgehog is my favorite video game series of all time. The music, the fun wide variety of characters, the speedy gameplay, the beautiful creative scenery, I love sonic so so much, but it feels like the series has been pandering to outsiders rather than genuine fans like me, so I really hope they find a permanent fix for the series that satisfies the fans that were there through thick and thin.
