The first day of fall in Kyoto. I went for a walk through the quiet streets around Omiya, with no particular destination other than a coffee.

Along the way, I passed old buildings, sunflowers growing taller than me, and the little pots and plants people leave outside their homes. I crossed the Randen tracks, stopped at Motogion Nagi Shrine, and walked through the streets around Mibu-dera as the shops were closing for the day.

This part of the city may not be the Kyoto you see in postcards, but it’s the Kyoto I like walking through the most. Faded shop curtains, old machiya, plants outside people’s homes, and small things you might never notice if you weren’t walking.

I ended the day with one coffee in a machiya café filled with books on architecture, art and design.
