Just came directly from Linus' video!

The sample photos are amazing!

I’ve just picked up the Leica M4-P and I’m in love! The rangefinder is great for the 1981 copy, clearly visible in most of situations. The film itself is quite cheap if you buy bulk rolled / roll it yourself and most importantly develop and scan it yourself. Not having lightmeter might be an inconvenience but it actually makes you pay attention to the light in your scene and you can quickly  check the exposure on your phone if you’re super unsure. Yea, it’s mostly just a box that rewinds film, but the overall experience is so much better than whatever I’ve been shooting previously.

Back when I worked at a camera shop in the 80's and 90's (Bristols on Key Biscayne FL), I lusted after Leica. The owner of the store owned pretty much the entire Leica line and let me use them whenever I wanted with the goal of convincing me they weren’t worth it. And that the Nikon FM2 and Olympus OM2s and 3t were so much better in most ways at the time. Spent months using the m6 but he was right. Back then we were sending leicas off to repair so often. Today I am in love with the Lumix s9 with the Mandler 35mm lens, though my om2s is still going strong after I bought it 42 years ago when I was in high school.

It's also the reason why a lot of movies uses 35mm in movies too. With how digital has evolved, it's easy to make digital look like film. In fact I've seen some movies shot on film and I didn't realize it was shot on film. But for the cast and crew, it makes everyone more focused and disciplined as every second cost more and more money and makes the directors and cinematorphers thinking about shots more carefully. Also I need to make it clear that I'm talking specifically about 35mm film, not 16 or 70/IMAX. You can tell the difference to digital there.

Been waiting for this since the floatplane collab release. I'm so glad you had time to finish this well.

I have this.. since two years now. Bought it because it was so highly praised.. returned two weeks ago to my Nikon FE2.. much better for me. The Leica is cool, and thats it. Photographing with the Nikon makes me more fun.

I’m getting started with making content on YouTube and your channel is one of the first I thought of when it came to video advice.

I’ll be monitoring this space so I know enough when it comes time to buy an actual camera, lights and mics. 😁

Considering the price difference between the M4-P and the M6, that's a lot of $$$ for a light meter.

Great video

So glad to see you with ltt

thanks for explaining the history. im a newbie 2:55

Wonderful video! I ended up picking up a Reissue and it's such a wonderful camera to use. You can definitely get one cheaper on the grey market.

I love my M6. It’s definitely not a camera I’d say is the best or a camera I’d recommend to someone looking to get into film. But it’s definitely a camera that you’d want to use as often as possible if you gel with it.

The sound design is incredible.

I love using manual lenses on my digital cameras. Not using focus peaking but instead zooming in to focus is weirdly satisfying. The only camera I have with a range finder is the InstantKon RF70 and I don’t enjoy it. But to be fair, that is a very small one and it has no diopter, so it’s blurry to my eye. But aligning the patch is just frustrating. Maybe I’d like a Leica though.

Me with the Canon 1dx I just bought. For the novelty and the experience.
Still love my mirrorless cameras but I miss the DSLR experience that I started with.

You can try the Ilford XP2 C41 Black and white film, its the only film that allows you to change the ISO on the fly as you shoot. it has up to 9.5 stops in dynamic range.

Funny how this video comes out not long after I got gifted an M6.

Any M3 or M4 + a mini cold/hot shoe light meter and the Mandler 35mm f2 lens will get you all of the experience for a fraction of the cost. Still not cheap but the M3 and M4 are regarded as a lot of Leica enthusiasts favourite cameras. They're super simple and properly built like if Rolls Royce made tanks, which is why so many are still working perfectly even today. Pick up a good one, get a reputable company to give it a CLA and pass it down to your kids after 30 years use. :)
