Why Leica?

What makes Leica cameras so special — and are they actually worth the money?

In this video, I take a closer look at the Leica M240 and try to understand what makes Leica so different. From the shooting experience and design to the lenses and the images it produces — is there really something special about Leica, or is it simply hype?

I also talk about my experience with the Leica M240 paired with the Voigtländer 35mm f/1.4 MC and the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1.

If you're thinking about buying a Leica, or you're simply curious about why people are willing to spend so much on a camera, this video is for you.

Still on the M240 too. It's hard to beat for travel and street shooting. I've been to some 15 counties with it now. One, maybe two lenses. Doesn't weigh you down, encourages exploration due to primes, and creative problem solving due to limitations. If you want it to be totally transparent, just zone focus on a wide lens and go snapshot mode.

I used the 50/1.1 for a while. Slept on lens, imo. It has such amazing character and the build is super robust.

Nice pics, can really tell you like your m240! I have an M8 now which I love (most of it), but there is something with the really crisp sharpness with slight highlight edge glow that comes from the m240 that makes me miss my old one sometimes. I kinda loved and hated the files at the same time haha, but they do have something and I do actually recognize photos from them more often than not

I have the exact same camera you had and i had to agree that this camera has some magic in its colours. I also dislike clinically sharp photos and the M240 really complements my style. I guess it’s the same for you too

Nothing beats an M rangefinder for manual focus. Focus peaking, punch in or the split screens on old SLR I’ve used them all for years the M is by far the fastest and most intuitive, with some practice. The M is also the best for hyperfocal shooting at f8-f11 as the viewfinder shows you everything in focus, near and far, unlike a see through the lens camera.

My Leica M-D 262 uses the same sensor as the M 240. The sensor was designed and built in Europe with outstanding color reproduction...📷

Nice video, I’m getting one a 240 next week and paying hefty eBay prices for batteries since this didn’t come with one. Sold out everywhere!

Once you buy a Leica and a couple of different Leica lenses it hard to turn around and go back. The best part of an M system is the Leica M lenses, and there are lots of them. Leica can always add 20mp of resolution to their latest M body. Leica's M system is like a narcotic drug. You should stick to light beer.

Don't get it twisted, it's a consumer electronic device, regardless of the viewfinder. A DSLR also has an optical viewfinder.

Also, I shoot the way I shot film. There's nothing magical about a rangefinder in that respect. If you are serious about being forced to slow down, shoot large format.

DSLRs also have great battery life.

Come on, guys, stop attributing magical qualities that don't exist.
